Places of interest in Spain – Burgos

When you plan your itinerary in Spain, keep in mind the ancient city of Burgos. Remember that if you miss this place, you are really missing a lot. This autonomous province is located to the North of Spain. With a population of about 200000 inhabitants, Burgos has many interesting places to visit. Let us start our tour of Burgos:
Brief history:
Like many other places of Spain, even Burgos has been influenced by many civilizations like the Romans, Moors and Visigoths. Many of the monuments which are preserved in Burgos speak of the influence these civilizations had on the life of the people of Burgos. Now we are at the Arco de Santa Maria gate of the old city. As you can see the gateway is beautifully designed. The statues which you find at the gateway are those of some of the dignitaries of Burgos.
Churches:
Burgos is one the few provinces which has many ancient churches. Here we have many ancient churches to see. Some of the ancient churches are San Gil Church, San Pedro church Santiago church, San Cosme y San church. Churches like Carthusian monastery, Covarrubias church are some of the other churches of historical importance. These churches are built in Gothic architecture.
Cathedral:
Now we are in the ancient cathedral. This is one of the masterpiece works of architecture. Built in typical Gothic style, this cathedral attracts large number of visitors throughout the year. It is certainly a pleasure to watch this cathedral. In fact this cathedral is called as the jewel in religious architecture. The interior of the cathedral has beautiful works of sculpture of knights who are fully armed, intricately carved traceries, etc. It is really a pleasure to visit this cathedral.
Monastery:
Now we are in the famous de las Huelgas Monastery. Historians say that it was King Alfonso VIII who built this famous monastery. This monastery is known for its extraordinarily beautiful pre-gothic architecture. Every part of the monastery has been beautifully designed. There is a church inside this Monastery. The other monastery called the Carthusian Monastery is in the centre of the city. This is popular for the beautiful statue of St.Bruno which is carved in wood. The mausoleum of King John II has been installed in wooden choir. The statues of some of the angels are installed in the top of the cathedral.
The churches, cathedral and monastery receive the highest number of visitors.
