There are admittedly a lot of methods that you can apply to write a really good song. And here are a few more tips in writing songs.
You can try adding some pizzazz to common chord progressions. You can easily pick out commonly used chord progressions in today’s music. And true enough, a lot of them have been used and reused. Try to add some more flavors to these already familiar chord progressions. It will add some more flair in your song. You can add some more chords to it, more progression. Some more elaborate songs use more than four chords. You can go down that alley too. Use diminished, augmented, 4th, 7th and other inversions of chords to add more oomph to your song.
Not all songwriters would say that this works for them. But for most, it does. Let the melody play itself out first. Then after you come up with the melody, you let the words write themselves. When you play the music, the words just melodically and systematically flow. This will allow the words to fit themselves in the song. Of course, you can always do it the other way around. Just find the method you are comfortable with.
Also, use pretty simple words. Try to avoid large and clumsy ones unless you really have a purpose for putting them there. Simple words help the audience understand better. More complex words just miss the purpose of coming up with a song anyway.
Another thing that you can do is to listen to your songs as part of the audience. True enough, it can be pretty difficult to be much unbiased when it comes to listening to your songs. But this will help you realize what you really need to improve on and to work on in the song and in the writing style and playing style that you employ.
You can also ask your friends to listen to your song. Don’t tell them who made it. Just ask what they think of it. You may be able to get unbiased reactions from them when you actually don’t tell them that you made the song. And this will tell you how the song generally projects to your audience.
Remember the tip about having a journal handy? This tip aims to help you become inspired with something to write about. The journal helps you think about the things that would move you or compel you to write songs. It may ultimately be so pointless, that inspiration. But it is enough to coax words and music out of your head. Most of the time, songwriters use strong emotion to write. And that’s why there is an abundance of love songs on the airwaves as this is the most compelling emotion known today.
Lastly, it helps a lot if you really practice. In whatever you do and would like to achieve, it helps a lot if you really practice. Practicing will help you improve your skills in writing songs. And this will help you familiarize yourself with the tricks to avoid pitfalls and dead ends. It will help you find your own path to becoming a real success.
