It's Tornado season in Oklahoma. Each year tornadoes travel through the Sooner state and bring down hail on one roof after another. Roofing repair is big business and can be a very simple repair for informed home owners. Roofing contractors use a variety of methods to repair your home. Some are honest and some are not.
There are many things to look for when deciding to repair your home yourself or to hire a professional roofing repair contractor.
A knowledgeable roofing repairman will be able to look at your house and know the approximate age of the roof. The will be able to crawl on top of your house and easily spot any hail damage. Another key question to ask a prospective roofer would be how many layers of shingles you have on your home. Additional layers can cost extra to remove because of the added labor and dump charges.
Roofing a home is more complicated than buying shingles and nails. You will need to consult with a qualified roofer to find out what type and style of shingles to buy. There are different styles such as 3 tabs and architectural style that have differing costs and different uses. There are also different weights of underlayment. 15 pound and 30 pound are the two most common and should only be used under the right circumstances.
Shingle color is also a decision that must be made in order to blend your roof with the other features of your house. Perhaps you are thinking about changing the trip color of your house after the new roof is installed. This can lead to an entirely different color choice based on what you are planning to paint.
What about metal? Many homeowners are choosing to go with metal roofing instead of conventional shingles. There is an increase in initial cost with metal but the life of the product may outweigh any such cost.
The prep work is more important in a quality roof that what you actually see. Many times wood is rotted under the current shingles and must be replaced in order to properly protect your home. Many homeowners have a shingled roof that is simply laid over the shake style shingles. These shingles must be replaced and new plywood installed over the entire roof before new felt paper and shingles can be laid. This can be one of the costliest types of repair, but is necessary to cover your home properly.
Are you aware that roofers need to carry insurance? Many people get a knock on their door after a storm has passed through. These roofers may not have any type of insurance at all. This is common sense, that many people overlook, and do not take precautions for. Get a copy of your roofing contractors insurance to protect yourself. You do not want people walking around on a slick roof with weird angles and falling.
Who is going to clean up all the shingle pieces and nails from around your home? This is one question you always want answered. Make sure that the roofer you hire has shown a desire for leaving your property in the same shape he found it in. This will include using a roller magnet around your property and tarping over shrubs and plants that you do not want damaged.
Good luck in your search to find a quality roofer in your area. Above all else make sure your roofer is punctual and does what he says he will do. Remember that most roofing jobs handled by quality roofers should only last one day on a normal size 3-4 bedroom house. If they suggest that the roof would take longer, beware. You do not want your house uncovered and unprotected for any amount of time.
You never really know when the next storm will blow through town.
