Chiropractic Support Systems: mattresses, chairs, and more
Chiropractic care involves more than having regular treatments and check-ups with a qualified chiropractor. Good spinal management needs to be maintained throughout the day and it's the small things that count. In the overall scheme of things, bedding and footwear might not seem like a big deal - but they do make an enormous difference to the way your body functions and feels.
Mattress
Most people spend about a third of the day sleeping, so the quality of the mattress you sleep on has an enormous impact on the quality of your sleep and the health of your spine. Select a firmer mattress rather than one that is too soft. When lying on one side your waist should be supported so that your spine appears straight when viewed from behind. Your mattress should be firm enough to provide plenty of support but offer enough 'give' to conform to your spine's natural curve. It cannot be stressed enough that the bed is THE MOST important piece of equipment in your life. More important than the TV or car, so please consult your chiropractor to find out how a great bed can be!
Pillow
You should use only one pillow to support your head and maintain the alignment of your spine. It is important to avoid pillows that position your head and neck unnaturally - your head and neck should always remain level with your spine. In some cases a 'contour pillow' may be beneficial to help restore your normal neck (cervical) curve. If you sleep on your side, it also can be beneficial to sleep with a pillow between your legs.
Computer/desk chair
Are you someone who spends more time sitting at your desk than sleeping in your bed? If so, it's vitally important for you to use a chair that provides proper support. Ergonomic chairs are excellent but they can be expensive. There are other less expensive options available but you'll need to do your homework. When selecting a regular desk chair, make sure that it allows you to adjust not only the height but the lumbar positioning as well. You need to be able to sit comfortably, with both feet flat on the floor and thighs parallel to the floor. Many chairs have adjustable armrests that will enable you to rest your arms without pushing your shoulders up - make sure that your shoulders are relaxed. Remember - it is really important to stand up every hour or so to stretch your legs.
Computer Screen
Centre the screen directly in front of you above your keyboard - this will allow you to look straight at the screen without turning or twisting your neck. Position the top of the screen approximately 2-3 inches above seated eye level and sit at least an arm's length away. The keyboard should be low enough that your shoulders are relaxed and your arms are comfortably near your body.
Shoes
Feet carry a person in excess of 120,000 kilometres during their lifetime (the equivalent of more than three times around the world). Painful feet or feet that aren't being supported properly put stress on the joints in your ankles, knees, hips and lower spine. Chiropractic adjustments of your feet will go a long way to assisting the body's postural stability, can help alleviate pain and prevent further damage. Your Chiropractor may recommend specific shoes or orthotic supports (shoe inserts) to provide better support. When selecting shoes make sure that the shoe has an index finger's width between your toe and the tip of the shoe. Your heel needs to fit comfortably against the back of the shoe and not slide when you walk. Throw out old shoes - their worn structure won't provide adequate support.
