Your first reaction is probably going to be that the size of the mattress you choose, whether it be a twin, full, queen, or king, depends on how many people are going to be sleeping on the mattress. If there are two people then usually a queen or king memory foam mattress is selected. Sometimes you want a king size mattress, but you would not be able to get it into your bedroom because of its size. Because memory foam is more pliable than its traditional counterpart, box springs and mattress, it can often fit into a bedroom where a stiff mattress and box could not.
Fifty years ago the majority of couples slept on queen size mattresses. Today, because of the larger bedrooms in homes, a majority of couples sleep on king size mattresses. In addition, today's couples are sleeping more on latex or memory foam than on a mattress with steel coils in it.
What's the Size Difference Between a King Memory Foam Mattress and a Queen?
A queen memory foam mattress is 16" narrower than a king memory foam mattress, but the same length. For those couples who experience tossing and turning and/or snoring, going from a queen size to a king size will make a huge difference.
What Does Sleeping on a Memory Foam Mattress Feel Like?
A majority of people who attempt to describe the feeling say they feel a combination of the comfort of a soft mattress and the supportiveness of a firm mattress. They also comment that the mattress feels cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Many people also swear that they feel less movement by their partner throughout the night.
What's the History of Memory Foam?
Many people mistakenly believe that the astronauts onboard the first space shuttles slept on king memory foam mattresses. Memory foam was used as a protection from the g-forces that they experienced during takeoff, but not as a sleeping surface.
Memory foam mattresses were originally used in the medical environment to bring relief to patients who were confined to their beds for long periods of time. Sleeping on a regular mattress caused these patients to lose blood flow to some of the most important regions of their body which caused horrible pressure sores and/or gangrene.
What is Memory Foam?
A king memory foam mattress, or any other size, is made from polyurethane and other chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. Higher density memory foam reacts to body heat which allows it to mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes.
