Increased production of the oil by skins' oil glands result in the occurrence of a skin infection known as ‘Acne'. The oil, lubricating the skin, often gets blocked in the oil ducts, causing common forms of infection such as blackheads, pimples, and whiteheads on the skin. Sometimes, cysts are also caused due to the increased production of oil. Generally the most densely populated areas of sebaceous follicles are most commonly affected with acne. The areas reporting densest population of the sebaceous follicles include face, back, and also the chest. Acne can also be considered to be an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands of the skin. The pustules; papules; comedones; scaly red skin; blackheads and whiteheads; pimples; are all the possible symptoms of acne.
Usually, acne occurs during adolescence, and is extended onto adulthood. The increase of the male sex hormones also results in the occurrence of acne in the males. Whenever the pores in the skin get clogged, there is an emergence of whiteheads, blackheads, cysts and pimples.
There are various symptoms of acne, which can be easily recognized. There can be occurrence of pimples, which are small swellings on the skin that also contain pus. There can also be dark formations and blackheads appearing on the skin. They result from the presence of cells and oil in the blocked skin pores. The blackheads appear when the pores open and are exposed to the dust and dirt. It generally gives the appearance of pores of black color. Whiteheads are commonly seen as raised white swellings or bumps on the skin. They are also caused due to the increased production of oil, with the only difference that the pores remain closed. Cysts are the closed sacs beneath the skin or deeper that contain fluid or semisolid substances. The blackheads are also often known as "open comedo"; and the whiteheads are known as ‘closed comedo'.
There are several causes of Acne. The several causes put together result in the occurrence of whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. But the four major causes are: the blockage of the skin pores, the overactive oil glands, common inflammation, and the overly active oil glands or the sebaceous glands. Often it is observed that at times of stress, there is an enhanced production of the hormones from the adrenalin glands. This causes an enlargement of the oil glands, which are visible on the skin as bumps. Majorly, acne occurs in full bloom at the time of puberty, as there is an increased production of the hormones. Whenever, there is some blockage, the oil gets trapped in the pores and results in acne. Generally, the cause of the occurrence is still not known, but poor hygiene is also one of the major causes.
Bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is also responsible for acne; as it grows in the blocked pores. This bacterium often secretes some harmful chemicals which change the composition of the oil and result in irritation and scarring on the skin.
In such circumstances, one certainly needs to cure Acne. In order to cure acne, help of medicines needs to be taken. Mild skin acne is not very obvious on the skin. Often people with mild acne can hope to get a clear skin by just taking good care of the skin. Various products are available for the treatment of acne. If you are not able to get relief, you must take the help of a dermatologist (doctors specializing in the treatment of the skin problems).
Basically treatment of acne serves to heal the lesions and prevent the occurrence and development of the new lesions. It also helps in the prevention of the scarring and reducing the inflammation on the skin. Often, acne causes stress and embarrassment in the people. Thus, drug treatment is often recommended for an immediate cure of acne. Drug treatment helps to reduce the problems of acne and helps to cure the very causes of acne such as treating the increased production of oil, treating inflammation, and also discouraging the undue assimilation of cells in the sebaceous glands.
