Amalgam Fillings Good or Bad

One of the more common methods to fill a cavity historically is by using a filling that contained silver and mercury. While there are now alternatives now to using filing like this, then practice still exists and is used by many dentists today. The basic purpose of a filling is to fill the "void" or area created when a dentist drills out the cavity.
Mercury fillings are made from a variety of materials that include copper, tin and zinc. They are relatively cheap and easy to use so have become very popular over the years. Some of the concerns that have been raised include the possibility that some of these metals can find their way into your body as toxins. One concern is that older or larger fillings may cause small amounts of mercury to pass into the tissue of your mouth and the blood stream.
The ADA (American Dental Association's) position is that that amalgam fillings are safe and that they have stood the test of time given that they have been used in hundred's of millions of Americans to help restore teeth. Their position is that it has been studied extensively and has an established record of safety and effectiveness.
On the other hand many people believe that it is wiser to remove mercury so that it does not build up in your system. Some people also believe that the mercury in your amalgam fillings should be removed as it is the primary source of heavy metals in your body. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) has petitioned government to limit the use of mercury amalgams. The governments of Austria, Finland, Germany and Sweden have already announced plans to stop or limit the use of "dental mercury amalgams." and many citizens groups also advocate it's removal.
As always, consult with your dentist to determine the best course of action for your own dental health needs.
