Building an addition is often the ideal solution to lack of space at home. Adding on one or more rooms can help keep the peace and alleviate stress, not to mention making home life more comfortable. Many municipalities have strict building codes on requirements for how close homeowners can build to their property lines. As a result, it may be difficult or impossible to add on to the ground floor of a house. This is when a second floor addition is appropriate. The size, shape and roofline can often be matched to the available structure of the house. Coordinated building and roofing materials help it to blend in with the existing construction. Second floor home additions can be used for a variety of purposes.
Bedroom
A growing family is one of the most common reasons that people run out of space. Children sharing a bedroom when they are very young can be convenient for parents and make little ones feel safe. As they get older; however, children have more of a need for privacy. By the time they are teenagers, the house may need an additional bedroom or two to quell any infighting. It does not have to be big, but should have a window, a door and electricity to make its new occupant happy. Given a choice between sharing a room and not having a window, most teens will gladly forego the window, as well.
Office
Telecommuting and freelancing are growing solutions to employment needs. Rather than driving in to the office every day, may people are reporting to their computers instead. Having a quiet place to work without interruption is important to getting the job done. Creating a separate office space is also important for mind-set. When working at home, it may be difficult for some people to turn off their "work mode" when paperwork and laptops are sitting on the dining room table, beckoning them to return and finish an assignment. This takes time away from family and promotes an unhealthy lifestyle. Adding on an office in a separate part of the house that is used only during designated working hours will help divide work and home life. Making it comfortable and technology-friendly will also help with productivity.
Entertainment
The longer people stay in one place, the more toys and possessions they have. The entertainment system, television, Wii, computers and musical collections all take up space. Having at least one room dedicated to sights and sounds improves the quality of living. An entertainment room makes a promising home remodeling project, and creates a place to relax, have fun, watch sports and movies, and entertain guests.
