Fajita recipes are fast becoming the best option when it comes to eating healthy both outside and inside the house. Fajitas are a combined cuisine of Texan and Mexican origin; they used to be meals eaten by the Mexican workers in Texas in the previous century. Like all things good, the popularity of the Fajita soon spread and resulted in Fajita appearing in almost all menus across the state. The reason for such popularity of the Fajita was that you could make it in numerous variations and in any manner with a large number of differing ingredients to suit people's palate. Although, you will find many purists pooh-poohing this variation from the 'original recipe', it is the reason why fajita recipes can be so healthy. However the truth behind the phrase 'to each his own' is exactly what fajitas can give you in terms of both taste and health & nutrition requirements.
Healthy Fajitas
The general perception of making foods healthy is by omitting all the unhealthy parts like oil, salt, fat and simple carbohydrates. Though this holds true for the fajita this is not where it ends like in the case of other foods. You can go one-step further and add certain ingredients to your fajita recipe to make a fajita a healthy meal. Think of all the vegetables that you leave out of your meal. The cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, spinach and all the other vegetables that are good for you never find a way on to your dinner plate. Many people do not like eating these vegetables simply because there is no interesting way in which you can cook them to make them tasty. This is especially true for children. The fajita can do away with all these problems.
All you have to do is incorporate them into your fajita recipe. If you are imaginative, you can bring in a number of things into your fajita. For example instead of frying your mix or making it in a wok, you can grill it or serve it fresh with a hot sauce over it. You can add any vegetable you want to the mix and with the right seasoning of bell pepper, oregano and so on it can become a delicacy.
You could also play around with the meats for the fajita. The fajita recipe can become a nice healthy meal if you replace beef with say smoked or grilled chicken breast, shrimp and maybe even pork if you want to extend the limits.
You can also make the tortilla a healthy and nutritious affair. Use the multigrain option instead of refined flour, which is a good option nevertheless. You can play around with the flour too; you could choose a wheat flour or maybe even soy to see how it would turn out. Both of them are excellent and healthy options. Soy will make your fajita low fat, and wheat will make it high fibre, so it is a win-win situation.
