Acute sinusitis can be treated by using conventional methods as well as home remedies. However, chronic sinusitis can be very difficult to treat without the proper diagnosis. Usually, physicians would prescribe antibiotics to treat sinusitis, however antibiotics are not effective at all times. There are instances that antibiotic therapy fails. If this happens, what then should sinus sufferers do? Are there still options available for them? Good news is, there are other methods that sinusitis sufferers can use to treat their sinus infection. However some of these methods are invasive.
The most common symptom of a sinus problem is clogged nose. Usually, sinus sufferers will first experience discomfort on their nasal area. Nasal sprays and decongestant can help solve that problem. However, frequent use of nasal sprays and decongestants has a significant side effect. If you would want to avoid those unwanted side effects, then you can opt for nasal irrigation using a saline solution. Although flushing your nasal passages using a saline solution is not very effective in providing relief for chronic sinusitis, this procedure is used popularly used to alleviate nasal congestion for acute sinusitis attacks. Steam inhalation is another popular remedy that is also used to relieve clogged nose. Oftentimes, drops of eucalyptus oil are incorporated in the steam. Some also recommend humidifiers. Using humidifier is also a proven effective way to prevent sinus attacks. However, caution must be exercised in using humidifiers. Take note of the fact that humidifiers may trigger growth of fungi. As you know, fungus can also trigger sinusitis attacks. Facial pains and headache is also a common manifestation of a sinus infection. Pain relievers are used to address this problem.
In severe cases of sinusitis, sinus sufferers resort to sinus surgery as their last option. Surgery should only be advised if all other methods of treatment fail. Sinus surgeries specifically address the problem of nasal polyps which is also a common cause of a sinus infection. Nasal polyps are grape-like overgrowth that causes blockage to the nasal passages. Surgery must be performed if and only if there is a concrete diagnosis of a chronic sinus infection. Usually, to properly diagnose the condition, the patient will need to undergo CT scan, MRI, or X-rays before final diagnosis of sinusitis is obtained. In cases where a child is diagnosed to be suffering from a chronic sinusitis, surgery of the adenoids may be considered.
The above mentioned treatments for sinus problems are just few of the many known effective treatments to correct sinus problems. Some sinus sufferers would prefer conventional treatments of prescription drugs. There are also those who would opt for natural home remedies. Whatever your choice of treatment may be, the most important factor to consider is that you have consulted help from a registered medical professional. It is even more advisable to seek advice from a sinus specialist. This way, your problem will be diagnosed properly; hence you will be able to identify the most appropriate treatment to treat your sinus problem.
