Dental implants are frequently successful, and life changing for every patient who decides to get them. However, some patients are scared off by myths and misconceptions they have heard from people who are not experts in the field. I have put together the following list of common myths about dental implants, followed by the facts that contradict them.
Myth: Dental implant surgery is very painful
Despite common belief, the dental implant procedure is one of the least painful as long as an experienced orthodontist is performing it. Even recovery time for implants is not as painful as many procedures, some patients can even go rift back to work after leaving the dentists office.
Myth: I cannot afford dental implants
Many dental offices make it impossible for many of their patients to afford dental implants, leaving them having to choose less expensive options that will not suit them as well. At Caring Dentistry of San Rafael, we work with every patient to give the best care we can offer, no matter what. We provide different payment types and payment plans so we can meet every patient's needs.
Myth: Dental implants are just permanent dentures
While dental implants and dentures are both replacements for real teeth, they are actually very different. While dentures need adhesives to stay in place and can feel unnatural, implants are permanently fixed, allowing you to eat, talk and small like you used to.
Myth: Since implants must integrate with the bone, my weak bone structure disqualifies me
If you do not have sufficient bone density or size, a bone graft could be the best option for you. Bone grafts help provide you with sufficient bone to support an implant. You will only know if you ask a dentist if this procedure is right for you.
Myth: Since they are not real teeth, I do not need to brush my implants
A lot of implant recipients know they are not as prone to cavities or staining, so they fail to take proper care of them. Dental implants need to be brushed, flossed and taken care of just like any other teeth.
Myth: Dental implants are not a popular in this country
Actually, the popularity of dental implants is growing every year, as the success rate and great word of mouth spreads. There are about 3 million people with dental implants in the U.S. and that number increases by about 500,000 every year.
Myth: Smokers and drinkers cannot receive implants
While it is true that being a cigarette smoker or regular drinker will lower the success rate of the dental implant procedure, it will not disqualify you alone. Be honest with your qualified dentist or oral surgeon, and they should tell you whether you are a good candidate for implants despite your habits.
Myth: Elderly patients are not qualified candidates for implants
There is no age limit when it comes to dental implants. The qualification of a patient relies entirely on their oral health, and general health history.
We know going to the dentist isn’t your favorite thing, but at Caring Dentistry of San Rafael we make visiting a more pleasant experience than you’ve ever imagined!
