When it comes to equestrian activities, your clothing is very important. Horseback riding attire is never complete until you find the appropriate boots. The style and material is dependent on the type of equestrian sport you are participating in and your own personal preferences.
Horse riding boots are sold in various styles and heights. For example, riders who prefer western style often wear cowboy boots, typically characterized by engraved leather and varying colors. English riders can often be seen wearing either paddock boots or field boots. Paddock boots are shorter, sometimes laced, thin heels and plenty of ankle support. Field horse riding boots come up to the knee, and are sold with and without laces.
Long riding boots provide protection to your legs and ankles but they can be a little restricting and uncomfortable if the weather is hot. There are a variety of long riding boots sold in either rubber or leather. Keep in mind, long leather riding boots can be expensive which is why long rubber riding boots are usually a more popular choice for riders.
When selecting horse riding boots, select a close-fitting boot if you will be riding English-style or in a formal horse show. The fit for this type of boot needs to reach up to your knee while hugging your leg. Most riders favor a back zippered boot since they are easier to get on and off. Western style horse riding boots are commonly used by riders who perform in events such as barrel racing or other types of Western riding. The best boots for this style run usually about mid-calf and they do not fit as snugly.
Opt for a low-cut type of boot if you plan on any casual riding. I prefer boots with a back zipper and fit my feet tightly, but comfortably. These types of horse riding boots provide superior foot stability and are a great choice for boots when you are just riding for pleasure.
There are lots of other different types of options you can get too. English and Western riders sometimes like to wear spurs on the heels of their boots. This is done either for show or as training aids. English riders participating in cross-country events are often advised to wear safety vests.
Remember, the type of horse riding boots you choose is usually determined by the type of riding you’ll going to be doing. Once you determine this, you can safely choose the type of boot you want.
