In a recent survey of realtors it was found that installing a garage door on your property could increase the value and the appearance to would be buyers. This is called curb appeal and over 75% of realtors said an attractive garage door would actually add to the value of the home. In fact many realtors recommend that even if you own an existing garage door it is better to replace it with a new one to increase the ‘curb appeal’ of your property.
So what kind of door should you go for? The most popular garage door is the overhead garage door.
This basically pulls up and the door is stored underneath the roof of the garage. How the mechanism works depends on the kind of system you have in place.
The type of Garage door you should choose all depends on the needs of your garage space and your budget, let’s look at some of your options:-
Steel
Steel garage doors by far the most popular option. This is because the doors are affordable, require little maintenance and are very durable.
Steel can come in very many different types including painted, formed into panels and can be even treated to look like wood. Unlike steels doors of the past, most steel garage doors are made of hot-dipped galvanized steel that is vinyl clad or given a baked on polyester finish. They will not rust or require repainting like wooden doors.
The disadvantages of steel are that it can easily dent and can be very difficult to repair. It is also not the best insulator of heat, so if you plan to use the garage space as a workshop this might not be the best option unless you have an outside heating source.
Wood
Wood garage doors are the most attractive and luxury garage door option. A great insulator and very robust, wood doors come in a variety of attractive styles such as cedar wood and last for years. The only issue for wood doors is than can be very high maintenance. The paint on the garage doors can crack and as they susceptible to the weather, due to expansion and contraction, it can easily warp. Painting the door every couple of years Is probably the best option.
Garage doors easily add benefits to your home, whether it’s adding value to your home, or improving the security, you can guarantee to add the wow factor to your curb appeal.
