Thailand New Year is one of the most awaited events of the year for the Thai People. It is also known as the Songkran Festival. Unlike on the other countries around the world that celebrated New Year on the month of January, Thais’ New Year is renowned on the mid of the hottest month of April.
You might be wondering on how local Thai celebrate this once a year event. On this day, they commemorate the revered Buddha by visiting the monasteries and offer prayers while extending the blessings that they received by giving alms to the monks after feeding them with the food they prepared. They prepare enough for this big event by thorough cleaning of their house beforehand. Thais believe that they have to clean and rejuvenate not only their house but more especially themselves. They remove all the house rubbish and bathe Buddha images so that they’ll have prosperous year ahead.
Thailand New Year is incomplete without the Big Water Battle. Even the motorist and by passers are unexcused for not being soaked on water on that day. Water is the symbol for cleansing and removing all the bad things from the past and takes away the bad luck for the whole year ahead. So you must be blessed if you get drenched with water.
