You may not realize that there are certain things you need to avoid at all costs when handing out promotional gifts. These things can cause even the most carefully planned promotional gift campaign to fail and can cause the money you have spent on implementing it to go to waste. Very few if any companies can afford to simply throw a part of their advertising budget away so learning what to avoid can be just as valuable as learning what to look for. Here are a few suggestions:
Don’t give gifts that do not relate to your Business
Never give gifts that cannot be linked to your business in some way. There needs to be a direct link between your company’s products and services and the gifts that you are looking at handing out. The last thing you want is for people to be totally unable to understand why you would give out a specific gift. The best promotional gifts are ones that work to create a total corporate picture rather than simply looking like something you gave out for no particular reason.
This does not mean that you are limited to items that are related directly to your products. Instead think about the larger picture. A gardening company may first think about gardening-related promotional gifts but they may also want to think about environmentally friendly products such as reusable shopping bags since they both have to do with the world outside. A computer company could give personalized items that link directly to using a computer but they may also want to consider fun and cutting edge gadgets or those that can help conserve energy in other areas of the home or office.
Don’t give the same gifts again and again
It can send a strong and negative impression to potential customers if you hand out the same items time and time again. Many businesses try and give the same items in a different color or that have a style that is slightly different than what had been given previously but this is not a good idea. If the items you are giving out were not popular this can be an even bigger problem.
Many companies want to be able to hand out collectible gifts. If your company is among this group, you need to make sure that you advertise it as such instead of hoping that they will pick up on this fact on their own. You need to make sure that the items are similar enough that they are obviously part of a series but different enough that they do not seem like copies of the items that were handed out before.
Don’t choose items that break your Budget
It is always essential to figure out what your budget is before you go shopping for promotional gifts and to stick within that budget. If a campaign is wildly successful you may find that you end up giving away a large number of items to meet demand and the last thing you want is for those items to be unaffordable as it can end up costing you a great deal of money.
By learning what to avoid you can increase your chances of handing out promotional gifts that will work well to raise your company’s profile and attract new business that may otherwise have been unavailable.
