Before the days of email, a business card was incredibly important. Even though things have changed in the business and email and cell phones have replaced a lot of old school "devices" the business card is still an important aspect of business. Although its primary function is to give someone your contact details, it actually has a very important additional function and that comes down to what it really says about you.
Companies pay graphic designers an incredible amount of money just to design a business card. Why? Well, its because it has to communicate much more than just your business details. The design says something about you and your business and for many people it would be their first contact with you as a business.
Design communicates in very subtle ways and its usually not something that can be pinned down to exact facts. Designers have the ability to capture the essence of a business and translate it into a graphic design. Its a real art and very few really have this ability but when you get it right it really hits home. Every now and again you come across a business card that just makes you green with envy. You wish it was yours because its so good.
If you think a business card is just a piece of paper with your name, phone number and email address on it, then think again. The design and presentation speaks much louder than words and anyone who sees your card will automatically (and subconsciously) make a judgment. A good designer will be able to help you influence this judgment to be something good, constructive and positive towards your business.
Seeing your business card as the "face" of your business and treating it like a "first impression" will help you put things in perspective and help you to present your business in a positive light. Its really that serious and not something you need to just brush off as a luxury.
With all the technology available today there is really no excuse for unprofessional cards. You can design and print great looking cards over the internet and the best part is that it costs a fraction of what it would cost to do it yourself. I know that you may think you can do an "okay" job designing your own business cards but for business sake, get a professional! In the long run its always worth the investment.
