The modern day equivalent of the conventional Finnish saunas and the steam baths of ancient Rome are steam showers. As a social activity, steam baths historically have been used by people for detoxification, relaxation, and cleansing. In the Baltics and in Scandinavia steam baths and saunas were frequently activities that were done by the entire family. The fact is that many cultures traditionally use some form of steam bath or room, such as the huts of the Native Americans and the Japanese mishiburo that date back to the 12th century.
Moist, warm air stimulates the sweat glands, increases ones blood pressure, and opens the pores. Hot steam opens the bronchial passages for asthma sufferers and relaxes the muscles following a workout. It also may be less aging and more beneficial than soap and water because it cleans the skin of impurities via the pores. Hot steam stimulates the natural defenses of the body and is considered to improve the immune system since it makes the body think that it has a fever.
Almost anybody can make use of the steam shower. However, there are some groups of people who seek the opinion of their medical provider or refrain from using this type of unit altogether. The people who should refrain include people who have circulatory problems, diabetes, or high blood pressure. It is also recommended that pregnant women and young children shouldn’t use this kind of unit. If you are in doubt, you should consult a physician.
These day it is relatively easy to retrofit or install a steam shower in today’s modern bathroom. Basically, the steam shower consists of a small shower space that is enclosed that uses a generator of steam to make the water boil. The steam is then released in the shower stall. The steam generator can be installed as far away from the unit as 25 feet and is connected to the building’s plumbing.
The generator should provide a temperature to prevent scalding and its power is based on the size of the space that it services. There are modular units available which can be retrofitted into an existing bathroom with only a minimal amount of construction that replace a standard bathtub. These units include shower heads, a vapor lock door, and the steam mechanism that are usually fabricated from acrylic. Some models also have a feature called a jet tub as well. There are many companies that make these kinds types of units.
