Cataract Surgery for my dad in Rock Hill
Cataract surgery- my dad needed it. He lives in Rock Hill, South Carolina and drives to Charlotte to see my kids and me. He enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, but it was getting harder and harder to see clearly while driving.
He then told me he couldn’t read the paper anymore; there were too many fuzzy spots on it. A few months later, he mentioned that he needed to move a chair right in front of the television, just a few inches away, to see the television.
I was worried about him. He needed eye surgery and his cataracts were just getting worse.
Cataracts- what’s to be afraid of?
My father was afraid of anyone touching his eye. He had heard that the natural lens of the eye is removed and a plastic replacement lens is put in. That information is correct, but it’s a very simple procedure. He was afraid of spending days in the hospital- but the more we researched, we found out that it’s an outpatient procedure, and only lasts a few minutes. He can come home, immediately after the procedure, and be able to take care of himself the next day. (The only reason there is one day of rest is that the eye surgery sedation makes everyone sleepy so they want to sleep the rest of the afternoon.)
Cataracts- what are they?
Cataracts are a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. The lens in the eye gradually thickens and becomes cloudy. The light cannot reach the back of your eye and vision is blurry or distorted. If left untreated, cataracts may cause blindness.
Cataracts- what are the costs?
The next problem was the cost. My father was worried that the eye surgeons in Rock Hill would charge him high fees to do cataract surgery. Then we found out that cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and also all private insurance companies. It was such a relief to find out that it would not cost a lot to get cataract surgery. He only needed to purchase the eye drops to use in his eyes after the surgery.
We visited several eye surgeons in the Rock Hill area, along with eye surgeons in the south Charlotte area to discuss the cataract eye surgery. We discovered that there are also premium lens choices that will help him see better than ever, and maybe not even need glasses unless he’s reading a small prescription. That would be amazing! He’s worn glasses for almost 50 years!
These lenses include "Toric" lens for distance vision and "multi-focal" lens for both distance and near vision.
Cataract surgery- does it hurt?
My father was afraid that the cataract eye surgery would be painful. Once we talked to several local eye surgeons, we discovered that he wouldn’t feel much at all during the surgery, it doesn’t hurt- and he may feel like he has a small little piece of dust in his eye the first day, but then the feeling goes away.

If you believe you are having eye problems, it’s important to consult a qualified ophthalmologist to have your eyes evaluated. Don’t wait until your vision keeps you from reading the paper, driving and watching television.
If your Rock Hill eye surgeon determines that you are right for cataract surgery, he or she will explain the different lens choices. Your Rock Hill cataract eye surgeon will perform an eye exam to assess your condition and then work with you to determine which lenses are right for you. It’s important to find a Rock Hill Cataract Eye Surgeon that you are comfortable with doing your cataract eye surgery.
