Fuerteventura is an Island just 60 or so miles off the coast of Africa. The Islands of the Balearics are opposite the border of Morocco and the Western Sahara. For this reason Fuerteventura enjoys an incredibly good climate all year round. During the summer months the temperature can reach up to 30 degrees celosias.
Fuerteventura is the longest Island of the Balearics after Tenerife at 98 Kilometers. The inland desert like landscapes are much like the dry conditions of Morocco. Most of the residents live small white washed and flat roofed houses in towns and villages dotted around the coast here they enjoy the offshore cooler breezes and welcome relief of the long beaches and tranquil sea.
Having tourists come to the island is a new thing, they residents of the island are trying to make it as inviting as possible. At this time the Island offers very good golf courses, water parks, shopping areas and great restaurants and cafes. For something a little different you should try Kite surfing or wind surfing. Fuerteventura has brilliant conditions for having a go at either sport and also makes the perfect conditions for anyone who has had a go at either sport before. There is some of Europe’s best big game fishing and diving to be found around the Island many boats will take visitors on excursions to have a go at either.
Most guests to Fuerteventura are there to enjoy some of the out of this world beaches, although the island is less than 100 kilometers long it has over 50 kilometers of beautiful white and gold beaches. The huge volume of tourists during the summer means finding your own piece of space on the beaches can be difficult, there are also private beaches and coves scattered around the island. The only way of getting to these are by car.
The best place to pick up a hire car is from the Airport which is located right on the coast of Fuerteventura. The location makes for some pretty spectacular landings if you are on the right side of the plane. The airport handled 4.6 million customers last year a large proportion of these came from the UK. It is best to pre book your car hire to advoid disappointment, it may also be cheaper if you pre book. The airport is only 10 minutes from the popular tourist resort of Caleta de Fuste. Once you have hired your car you will undoubtedly want to make the most of it, here are some destinations you should consider visiting:
There are a number of ports you can visit from which you will be able to take many trips. If you are not a competent diver there are some exciting trips to be had on glass bottomed boats or even submarines. The Subcat Submarine dives as deep as 30 meters just of the beautifully clear waters of Morro Jable. For something a little more traditional you can climb aboard the Pedra Sartaña this is a tall ship which sails from Morro Jable Harbour, you’ll be able to dive, swim, snorkel and enjoy the sunshine aboard this classic ship.
A definite place to visit is Betancuria, originally the capital it has some very interesting attractions,
In the centre of the village is the 17th century Iglesia de Santa Maria, it took almost a century to build after the previous church was destroyed by the Berber Pirates. Interestingly the original church on this site had the status of a Cathedral and was assigned a Bishop – who never showed up to do his job, maybe because of the location of the ‘cathedral’. On the northern outskirts of the village is the roof-less ruin of a 15th century Franciscan Monastery, the Monasterio de San Buenaventura.
If when you go on holiday or just to a different country and get fed up of seeing the same food everywhere there’s no need to worry about that happening here. The food in Fuerteventura is so vast from authentic Spanish food to typically English food.
Car Hire Spain. Why not also try La Manga Club one of the Worlds Great Holiday Resorts.
