In this article we are going to try and cover the most effective and important ways through which you can treat your coccyx pain. One thing that you have to understand is that the coccyx pain which is also known as the tailbone pain do not go away overnight, as this pain is caused by some sort of injury to the coccyx, it takes time to heal. Therefore, whatever treatment you take to reduce the coccyx pain won’t give you the results immediately, except for the pain killers. But the bitter fact about pain killers is that in most of the cases the pain returns when the effect of pain killers wears off. Therefore, even the doctors recommend that you should take other precautionary measures as well along with the medication.
Surveys done on coccyx pain patients show that they prefer exercises and other precautionary measures such as the use of coccyx cushions more than they recommend the medical treatment. Given below are some of the tips that can help you reduce the coccyx pain and even get rid of it in the long run.
-
The first and the foremost thing for you to remember is that in 80% of the cases tailbone pain is initiated due to wrong sitting posture as well as remaining seated for long periods of time. Therefore, try to avoid sitting for a long time and whenever it is possible do your work while standing. Also, try to use ergonomic chairs or coccyx cushions whenever you have to sit, both the ergonomic chairs and the coccyx cushions are designed in such a way that they prevent your body weight from falling directly on the coccyx when you sit, thus, your coccyx gets a chance to heal itself and your tailbone pain reduces.
-
Go for physical therapy, but make sure that the therapist that you are going to is an expert in his/her field. With the help of physical therapy you will be able to make the muscles and the coccyx itself stronger, which will not only make the healing process fast but also reduce your tailbone pain.
-
Make sure you don’t get constipation as it can make the coccyx pain a lot worse. In order to avoid constipation drink lots of water and eat fiber rich fruits and vegetables.
-
If you feel that the tailbone pain is getting worse you can take pain killers like Ibuprofen or in case of extreme pain after some fall, injections containing small amounts of local anesthetic are also given by orthopedic doctors. These injections can be effective as they reduce or eliminate the pain caused by the inflammation of the muscles around the coccyx due to the fall. And usually the inflammation reduces before the effect of these injections wears off and therefore, the patient feels reduced tailbone pain.
-
The last option, if no other treatment works out is the surgical removal of the coccyx. The doctors suggest it only when the coccyx pain becomes chronic and no other treatment seems effective even after many attempts. In this surgery the coccyx is completely removed and as it doesn’t actually have any function in our body its removal doesn’t affect us in any way.
These above given remedies can help you in reducing the coccyx pain. But always consult a doctor before taking any pain killers and if your pain seems to intensify, it is strongly recommended for you to see an expert orthopedic doctor.
