Microcephaly is a deficiency affecting the growth of the skull resulting in the improper functioning of the brain. In this kind of disability, the circumference of the skull is smaller than the average and the growth of skull gets obstructed, which in turn impedes the functioning of the brain.
Microcephaly is mostly a birth deficiency and it can also develop in the first few years of child’s life. It is mostly by hereditary, but this disability can also be due to the environmental influence, drug abuse or alcohol consumption during the pregnancy period. Diabetes, measles and chicken pox can also be held responsible in the context. Due to Microcephaly disease, babies’ growth will be hampered during infancy because they have smaller head than normal.
It can further lead to mental retardation and other abnormalities of speech and learning at a later stage in life. A child with this disorder faces lot of obstacles in his or her normal human growth. This disorder limits the functioning of the brain in many ways. Such children may face speech difficulties or learning problems. At times they won’t be able to learn many things. Children can develop some facial distortion or may not gain height and remain shorter.
Patients can even be hyperactive in their day-to-day behavior or can even develop neurological abnormalities or Seizure Disorder. The biggest complication is that Microcephaly cannot be treated for a child to achieve the normal size or shape of the head. Lots of researches have been done and to a certain extent, preventive measures are available. But the best help to such a child is that he or she must get extra care and attention. Special therapy and assistance must be provided to the child by the experts. This is not a simple task for the guardians due to the many financial and emotional problems to bring in.
