When someone feels pain in their lower backside especially when they sit for a long period of time, they are said to be suffering from coccyx pain which is also known as tailbone pain.
There can be many causes of coccyx pain. One of them is doing activities like cycling because in this exercise all the weight of your upper body is on your buttocks and when you move your legs friction between the tailbone and the bicycle seat causes coccyx pain.
Another reason for tailbone pain is when someone falls in a sitting position; in this case your body weight falls on your tailbone and can result in its bruising or fracture. It is strongly recommended to consult a doctor if you feel any pain after such fall.
There can be numerous reasons for coccyx pain thus the need for more ways to help relieve them. Listed below are some of the precautionary measures that you can take in order reduce tailbone pain.
-
Try not to sit for long period of time as it can make the coccyx pain worse because the longer you sit the longer your body pressure will be on your tailbone and it will make the injury worse rather than giving it a chance to heal. So, whenever it is possible try to do your work while standing rather than sitting down.
-
Use ergonomic chairs. These are the chairs especially designed for the people suffering from coccyx pain; in these ergonomic chairs the place where your tailbone will be when you sit down is hollow. Therefore, you don’t feel any pressure on your coccyx when you sit down. It is very good for people who suffer from tailbone pain and have to do work while sitting.
-
Try to eat vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber in order to avoid constipation as it can make your coccyx pain worse.
-
The use of ice can also help in reducing tailbone pain. Apply it to your backside for 15 minutes, 3-4 times a day and it will help you in reducing the pain.
-
Use coccyx cushion whenever you have to sit. Coccyx cushions which are usually in the form of doughnut cushions and wedge cushions have holes in them. In this way when you sit on them the body pressure does not fall on your tailbone. Thus, the use of these coccyx cushions can also help you in dealing with tailbone pain.
-
For expecting mothers who already suffer from coccyx pain it is strongly suggested for them to avoid vaginal delivery as it can aggravate coccyx pain to an unbearable level not only because of the pressure caused by all the pushing done during the delivery but also because the baby’s head might touch the coccyx when it pass through the birth canal, hence causing further damage to the tailbone.
-
You can also reduce the tailbone pain by taking painkillers such as Ibuprofen. But these medicines should only be taken after consulting a health expert.
All the above mentioned tips if followed can help you not only in reducing the tailbone pain but also getting rid of it eventually. But if you ever feel that the pains are getting worse it is recommended for you to see an orthopedic doctor.
