At the rate wireless devices are miniaturizing we'll soon need microscopic vision to carry on business. It took a mere decade for websites and cell phones to progress from questionable novelties to becoming totally indispensable resources. Most people's lives today revolve around their Blackberries and iPhones. As dehumanizing as it is to have a zombie population staring into their phones playing games or text-gossiping, they do make a fertile group of malleable consumers of online advertised items.
The .tel revolution is just around the corner. Setting up mini-websites will be the way to have updated information online with your business information and links appearing like digital business cards. In fact you can put only your logo, company name, and .tel site address on your physical business cards; when your information changes you can simply update the website. This will eliminate the need to order more boxes of paper business cards when your address changes or you get a new job title.
The new development is a Google algorithm that is being applied to mobile searches to meet the future demand for a quicker way to look up some business from a cell phone without all the typing needed to look through online yellow pages. Just as the online phone directories made five-pound paper books obsolete, mini-websites with .tel domain suffixes will replace online phone books. The .tel sites will work on all Internet-enabled mobile devices.
One of the major advantages is the fact that they will be visible through random search. Imagine if someone did a text search on a wireless device for a needed item or service and they click on a domain that shows several links - one to your website, one click to your phone numbers, e-mail, Skype, fax, and other condensed information. The .tel site will act as a central hub of contact information - a call to action in of itself, since you only need one finger to do the walking and click the favorite method of accessing the company. The SEO specialist should be excited about the conversion possibilities, for visitor numbers, SERPs rankings, and page views are only a start...the wording and functions on a page should entice the prospective customer to take action to be one step away from a purchase decision.
At the time of this writing the revolution is in its infancy, but like the .com revolution it may explode quickly. My experiments in optimizing such sites have shown good results for several of my SEO clients. I first researched the usefulness of .tel sites looking for a new service that can be marketed, and it seems that these will become widespread. The features allow the owner to pre-format any number of profiles to display which links will appear. In this way, phone numbers can be left out if there are after-hours periods where the business owner doesn't want to take phone calls on his mobile phone but would still leave the toll-free line visible. You can add different departments as sub-folders and link into other .tel sites.
It will be beneficial to update other information on the .tel website; sub-folders can be created to fill the site with more content to react to searches. When it comes to ranking above the competition, good rankings logically will largely depend on a good domain with major keywords. The reason for this is that Google retrieves the domain directly from the DNS, not the Google indexing server. This suggests that the retrieval might result in a faster arrival of the page. Rising above all of the competitors will need more than that however. Promoting these mini-websites will be just as important as your main website so you might as well get there first. As an SEO expert I am optimistic that high Google rankings can be achieved in the world of wireless random search.
