Retinoschisis: Retinoschisis refers to a condition when the neurosensory layers of the retina of the eyes split. It is a disease of the eye’s nerve tissues and essentially affects the macula’s retinal cells. Retinoschisis is marked by a loss of vision in a slow but progressive manner. The disorder can be of four types; they are degenerative, hereditary, tractional and exudative.
Causes of Retinoschisis: Basically, the disorder is manifested in two forms; namely, the senile form and the juvenile form. The senile disorder, which is caused on account of aging, affects men and women alike. The juvenile form, on the other hand, is passed on to the son from the mother. In other words, it is inherited and is related to the X chromosomes. Thus, the disorder can be acquired as well as genetic. In the former case, Retinoschisis is acquired when one is between the age of thirty to fifty.
Symptoms of Retinoschisis: Retinoschisis might have many a sign and symptom. Some of the most potent ones include impairment of vision, splitting of the retina, slow but progressive loss of vision, difficulty while reading, squinting, hemeralopia or difficulty in seeing things in bright light, retina’s degeneration, reduction of central vision, impairment of sharpness of vision and macular atrophy marked by a localized slackness of skin. However, the most commonly known symptoms happen to be a loss of tangential vision and decline of vision.
Complications related to Retinoschisis: Since Retinoschisis is related to the deterioration of the retinal cells, there can be a number of complications associated with the disorder. For instance, holes might develop in the retina and there is also a risk of detachment of the retina involved. Medical treatment is hardly effective in prevention of weakening of the retinal layers.
