Planning for retirement is important in order for people to reduce or eliminate the burden they might have on their families, as a result of lost income. Unfortunately, many people do not plan for retirement. Perhaps more unnerving is the fact that many of those who do, don't plan adequately. One of the factors that many people fail to take into account is the cost of healthcare.
Yes, seniors are eligible for assistance from Medicare, but what many people don't realize, is that Medicare does not cover all costs. In fact, about half of the costs of healthcare go uncovered. For this reason, it is important for individuals to plan for their retiree medical insurance before the issue becomes more complicated than it needs to.
The first thing that an individual needs to determine is if they will have enough income to cover their healthcare costs. It is a good idea to get in touch with a financial planner in order to make sure of this, because there are complicating factors such as inflation, which can make this difficult to determine. If an individual discovers that they will not be able to afford the cost of their current insurance provider during their retirement, based on their current retirement income projections, they shouldn't assume that Medicare will fill these gaps.
If somebody were to find that this is the case, the next step should be to look at their retirement plan to see if retiree medical insurance is taken into account. Many employers offer this benefit to their employees as a part of their retirement package. Just as with Medicare, however, they should not assume that this means they will be taken care of. In many cases, these kinds of default choices can end up haunting people later in life.
An employee should take a close look at their plan in order to see how they are covered. They should check the eligibility requirements for the plan in order to make sure that they will be covered. Generally, they will not offer benefits below a certain age. In many cases, they will also require that employees have worked a minimum number of years for the company. Employees will want to be well aware of these numbers before making any employment decisions. If they have had breaks or part-time work in the past, this can have an effect as well.
If somebody's employer promises to subsidize the plan, they should find out how much, and if it will expand too match the rate of inflation, or remain at a fixed dollar amount.
