Heartburn usually refers to pain and burning sensation felt in the chest just below the sternum. Contrary to its name, the condition has nothing to do with the human heart but is linked to the esophagus which is a long tubular structure that connects the mouth to the stomach. The pain and burning sensation produced by this disease is not confined to the breast only, as often it radiates to other parts like the neck, throat and jaw. It is actually a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is usually accompanied by swelling and a sour taste in your mouth.
Causes of heartburn
As already mentioned, the esophagus is a tubular structure that connects the mouth and stomach. Thus, the food we eat reach the stomach through the esophagus. Once the food reaches the stomach, the acid reflux into the esophagus is prevented by a circular muscle structure located at the intersection of the esophagus and stomach. This is known as lower esophageal sphincter or LES. But from time to time, either because of muscle weakness esophageal sphincter defects inherent in the structure, or accumulation of excess stomach acid, stomach acids go back to the esophagus.
Our stomach has a lining or coating that protects it from stomach acid or digestive system, but this coating is not present in the esophagus. So every time the acid from the stomach goes into the esophagus, it causes inflammation of its lining resulting in this disease. Risk factors for this include the consumption of highly acidic foods, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, etc. conditions such as obesity and pregnancy can put excess pressure on the stomach and thereby affect the functions of the esophageal sphincter. .
, certain medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen and hiatal hernia are some other risk factors or causes of acid reflux and heartburn.
