A mobile DJ business can be an excellent source of extra cash flow where you can realistically earn anywhere from $50 to $200 a hour. It takes a while to build up your business, but I have a business plan that I believe if you follow, you can actually start mostly on other people's money.

It is customary in the mobile DJ business to receive a deposit from your clients when they book an event with a DJ in order to reserve the date. This is the root of my business plan. Why do I know it will work? Simple, I have done it myself and I am sure that it will work in just about any town or city across the country. You may be saying to yourself, " Aren't you worried about competition?" Really? I have already established my business and honestly, what is the chance that you are located anywhere near me? So let's begin.

I will use the wedding DJ niche as my example. Most people planning a wedding that will need a DJ will be planning it several months or even a year in advance. I have found that weddings and proms are some of my highest paying gigs. Most weddings at the minimum pay $350 to $500 and depending on the demand and time of the year, $500 to $1000 is more like the norm. You can expect to get a deposit of anywhere from $100 to half of the DJ fee. We will come back to this later.

Let's jump to the equipment required to be a DJ. You will be surprised how little is cost to get a basic entry level DJ package. I was able to get my first set for about $550 and it is quality equipment. Now understand that this set would not allow me to compete with the high end DJ services. I did not want to try to DJ weddings that required that much equipment. I wanted to service the lower end of the market where the big boys were not trying to compete against me. It worked out well.

Let's go back to the deposit money. Let's say you find a DJ set that you can get for $750. What we need to do is work on booking enough events to get $750 in deposit money to buy the set outright. Another option is that some equipment suppliers will let us buy the equipment on a payment plan. We could work the plan in that direction. All we have to do is book a few weddings maybe 6 month in the future and collect the deposits now. Are you following along?
