Most people will agree that buying wholesale is always a good move. It is, however, not always appropriate in every situation and at times, can even end up costing you more. Here are some situations where you should just restrain yourself from buying in bulk.
-
Don’t buy perishables – You should never buy perishable items like vegetables and fruits in bulk, not unless you’ll be consuming soon after. Meat can be stored in the freezer but will only last for so long. Besides, when a store puts the perishables on sale, it only means that the items are already well on their way out.
-
Don’t buy junk food – Some may argue against this, but if you care about your health, refrain from bulk buying unnecessary food items such as soda, potato chips and candies. These are best eaten sparingly and if you must indulge, do it on rare occasions.
-
Don’t cave in to up selling strategies – Sometimes a salesperson can corner you into buying their product by making you feel that you’ll be missing out on a huge opportunity should you decide to look the other way. Leave the store on the first instance you feel that you’re being pressured to purchase something.
-
Don’t buy just because it’s cheap – There are things that you just can’t compromise, like your health. For example, deciding to switch to a shampoo that makes your head itch, just because it is sold at a wholesale price is a big no-no.
-
Don’t buy without checking out competitor prices – Make sure that you are aware of prices in other stores. If there is a significant price difference, consider buying items separately.
-
Don’t buy when you don’t have the budget - When you buy something, you essentially turn your money into goods. Most of the time what happens in this exchange is that you hand over more money that what the item is worth and you also lose something which you can spend in case of an emergency.
-
Don’t buy something just because you want it – This might seem pretty obvious, but most people suddenly have a hard time distinguishing needs from wants when faced with an attractive price tag. To put it plainly, a need is something you won’t be able to live without while a want is something that you can definitely live without and is often something which doesn’t fit your budget.
-
Don’t buy in excess of what you need – This one can also go the other way. When you buy, make sure that you’ll be able to use it up completely in moderation. Don’t exhaust your supply just for the sake of using and make sure there are no leftovers to waste.
-
Don’t over buy – Otherwise known as hoarding, it is the act of buying a lot just because you’re afraid that supplies will run out, or that you won’t come across a deal just as sweet anymore. This is greed in action and this is something that not even a person in dire straits should do.
-
Don’t buy at all – Sometimes the most difficult thing to do is just to say no. Financial gurus often argue that bulk buying translates to "something you don't need a lot of at a price you can't pass up." You’ll need to learn to accept this fact whenever it is obvious in a given situation.
