Senior citizens may not have had the opportunity to purchase insurance before and are just now looking into it. Even if you don’t have any current dependents you can use an over 50 life insurance policy to help pay for your final expenses and to leave a little behind as an inheritance. There are special concerns that come with aging and as such many seniors are denied "regular" coverage because of their age or health concerns. However, a senior’s health policy often comes with affordable rates and will fit into the budgets of many seniors. If you already have traditional insurance you could use a senior’s policy to supplement it.
When you buy a specialized over 50 life insurance policy you won’t be subjected to a health exam because it is understood that at this point you won’t need the insurance for long anyway and part of aging comes with health issues. You may be asked some medical health history questions or you may not be asked any at all. Most companies that specialize in senior’s health policy will insure you up to the age of 75. It’s practically never too late to get coverage for yourself.
Over 50 life insurance isn’t set up like traditional life insurance where you will get a minimum death benefit of $100,000. This is because you won’t be paying into it as long as you would with a traditional policy. They are designed to cover end of life costs and maybe leave a little behind, not provide full income for your family for years. As such, you will be offered coverage from $5000 to $50,000. With a lower payout you will be treated to a lower premium than you might otherwise pay which make them affordable for many seniors, even on fixed incomes.
An over 50 life insurance policy has one benefit to them that no other policy has – timely payouts. With a regular life insurance policy you will sometimes have to wait weeks or longer to get a payout. A senior’s policy, however, will often provide you with a settlement in as little as 24 hours past time of death. Your family will be able to plan and pay for your funeral without paying out of pocket for it.
There are frequent advertisements on television and the internet that offer senior’s insurance but you shouldn’t just go with a company because the rate looks good. Shop around a little and you very well may find lower rates that come with policies that are more suitable for your family and your lifestyle.
