The Rocktown Trail is an easy two mile trail that follows the ridges of Pigeon Mountain’s tallest spot and is only good for a day use hike. The trail is located within Cumberland Plateau in northwest Georgia in the 15,825 area of Wildlife Management Area’s land. The trail ultimately ends at Rocktown which is also the trail’s focal point that offers hikers the most unusual sizes and shapes of rocks and other rock formation in the area.
The trail consists of 140 acre land area where reddish rocks with iron ore deposits abound. The elevation ranges from 1,740 to 1800 feet. The Pigeon Mountain has several outdoor activities to offer such as camping, fishing, and picnic. The Rocktown Trail on the other hand is specifically designated for hiking although its neighboring trails are designated for biking, hiking, and even horseback riding. Thus, there is no camping ground available in this area.
This trail has little change in elevation and has a wide pathway which leads to the habitat of some wildlife species living in the area. Rocktown is located off of Rocky Lane and the trail starts at a small gravel parking area. The trail is marked with pink blazes and is an easy trek to take. Expect to see large boulders along the way surrounded by trees and vegetation such as huckleberry and blackberry.
To get to this trail from Lafayette, go west on GA 193 about 2.8 miles to Chamberlain Rd and then take a left turn from Chamberlain and proceed for about 3.4 miles to the Pigeon Mountain’s wooden marker for Crockford-Pigeon Mountain. Proceed off on a gravel road making a right turn pass the DNR check station. At this point, continue towards the Pigeon Mountain for 4.7 miles where the road subsequently leads left to a dirt road where a dead-end marker is found. The road continues for another 0.7 mile to Rocktown Road’s parking area where the trailhead is found.
The first group of these rock boulders can be found 0.5 mile along the trail which will then lead you to another half mile before reaching the Rocktown. Once you reach Rocktown, there some pathways and corridors that leads you to the top of these rocks. The rock towers at around 20 to 35 feet high. You can even do rock-climbing here and get the top view of the surrounding trees growing in this habitat. Take a breather here and get the best view on this trail.
Nevertheless, take extra care as the area is a natural habitat for several wildlife species such as bobcats, deers, coyotes, turkeys, and red and gray foxes.
If we have learned anything from recent flash floods and other tragedies it is that a reliable radio can save a life. We carry a variety of VHF, UHF and CB radios for sale. We also carry the more powerful 10 Meter Radios for those who feel they may need the extra broadcasting power.
