Families should evaluate their hot water heaters every few years and assess whether or not their needs are being met. There are several reasons homes might need new hot water heaters. Perhaps the hot water starts running cold before a family member has finished bathing. Perhaps the water does not run hot enough to do the tasks required of it, like washing the dishes or the clothes. Maybe the hot water heater is just too old and is not as energy efficient as you would like. These are all questions families must ask about their hot water heaters occasionally.
If, after discussing the needs of the family, you find there are hot water needs that could be better met, it might be time for a new hot water heater. However, before you rush out and buy a new one you should have a talk with a professional; the life of many hot water heaters can be extended with proper maintenance. If, however, your heater is several years old and is just not doing a great job anymore, it is probably time to review the different types of hot water heaters that are available.
The easiest decision is to simply replace the old heater with one of a similar design. However, once a person decides to investigate hot water heaters, they are often surprised at how many different types have been designed to meet the needs of the many different families out there. Families can choose from gas or electric, tank or tankless, constant heating styles or on demand styles. Figuring out what your family's demands for hot water are and the trajectory of your family's growth will help you make an informed choice in the market place of hot water heaters.
Is the size of your family changing? Are your kids becoming teenagers and showering all the time? Is energy efficiency important to you? Is your furnace room cramped and confined? All of these considerations can influence your decision about hot water heaters. For instance, if you are planning on growing the size of your family, you may want to consider a unit with a large tank or an on-demand unit so that you won't run out of hot water during the normal daily household usage.. If most of your kids are starting to leave the nest and the demand on the household will be going down, you may want to keep the same style and simply upgrade to a more energy efficient model. Most hot water heaters designed these days have improved efficiency, resulting in less resources being used and more money left in the family budget.
As your life changes so do the demands for hot water in your house. Talk to a professional who can help you make the best decision about hot water heaters and improve the running of your household. Many professionals are willing to answer simple questions about hot water heaters over the phone and help you evaluate if you need to upgrade to a better model or if you simply need some maintenance to get you through the next year or so.
