If you have a manual push mower, you have probably discovered that it is a very low maintenance piece of equipment. Unlike a gas-fueled motorized push mower, they do not have many parts that could break and impair the performance of the push mower. However, you do want to make sure that you take adequate care of your manual push mower so that it works properly and continues to help you keep your lawn looking nice. There are a few simple things that you need to do to take care of your manual push mower so that it lasts long and works the way it is supposed to work.
First, make sure to wipe your push mower off occasionally. You will notice that grass and other debris will collect inside the reel blades over time. Make sure to wipe off this debris with a towel after you use your push mower, and once or twice per year, you may want to spray the push mower off with a hose and clean it with dish or car soap. The cleaner you keep your push mower, the longer it will last. The same principle applies to gas-powered mowers.
Second, regularly lube the push mower's cutting blades. Doing so will help them turn properly so that they will be able to cut the grass smoothly and without many passes over the same spot. You don't need to do this every time you use your push mower, but it might be a good idea to lube it once every month or two months, depending on how often you need to mow your lawn. Of course, if you notice that your push mower is not working as well or if it is making squeaking noises, you will want to lube it right away. The lubricant should be applied to all parts of the reel blade of your push mower, including the axle shaft and wheels.
It is important to keep the blades on the reel sharp, because keeping the blades sharp will ensure that you get a nice clean cut that is healthy for the grass and keeps your yard looking great. You may want to consider purchasing a sharpening kit and using it on your mower's blade. Check with the manufacturer of your push mower or with other professionals to find out what kinds of kits are available and what would work best with your push mower.
Sometimes to keep your mower working properly you will need to adjust the mower blades. If you notice that your manual push mower produces a rough, uneven cut in your lawn, or if it is difficult to push, the problem may be that your blades are too tight or too loose. This causes misalignment, and thus an uneven cut. To adjust the blades, work from the rear of the mower. The cutting bar blade, which is located under the reel, can pivot. The front screws move the cutter bar away from the blades, and the screws in the back move it away from the blades.
If you have any questions about caring for and maintaining your push mower, make sure to contact a professional to help you. Taking care of your manual push mower is simple and easy, but in the long run it will make a big difference.
