Lymphedema is a chronic condition most recognizable by the swelling of the arms or legs, although it can be present nearly anywhere on the body. There are different types of treatment for various stages and degrees of lymphedema to reduce swelling and increase comfort for patients, but no cure. The most common symptom is mild and gradual swelling of the foot that gradually spreads to the rest of the leg. In cases of lymph node surgery related to breast cancer, the swelling often begins below the armpit. Compression sleeves and compression stockings are commonly worn by lymphedema patients to reduce and control swelling.
Identification
Many things can cause swelling of the arms, legs, hands and feet. Some short-term causes include pregnancy, allergies to food or medication, physical injury and poor circulation. Lymphedema is a unique long-term medical condition that is not to be confused with any of these short-term conditions. It is not caused by allergies or medication. It can sometimes onset during pregnancy, but is most common after breast cancer surgery. Poor circulation is associated with lymphedema, but is not a direct cause.
Causes
There are two main causes of the condition. One is naturally occurring from birth or puberty. It is less common in pregnancy. The second cause is a result of a blockage of the lymph system. This is normally caused by an infection, tumor or surgical procedure, which prevents lymphatic fluid from traversing the body. It becomes blocked and pools, causing mounds of swelling in areas along the groin, legs, feet, hands or arms.
Therapy
One goal of lymphedema therapy is to reduce swelling. This is done in a variety of ways, including massage, elevation of the affected area, wrapping and by wearing sleeves or stockings. Garments and wraps are used together on swollen areas. Some cases are best served by wraps for weeks or months until the swelling has abated enough for the patient to comfortably wear compression garments.
Convenience
Finding compression garments for lymphedema treatment is challenging for many patients and their therapists. Ordering garments that fit over swollen limbs for extreme cases is difficult due to size restrictions on most compression garments. As a result, certain manufacturers will construct custom compression sleeves or compression stockings. The garment is made according to specific measurements that fill the needs of the patients. Continual use of compression sleeves or socks gradually reduce the swelling. Measurements can be taken each time before the custom products are ordered through an online distributor.
