What are Wheel Bearings?
Every wheel of any vehicle revolves with the help of wheel bearings. Every wheel bearing has roller that rotates in the cage to lift the weight of vehicles to the axles. Many rollers are angled or tapered to carry heavy loads on the wheels when the vehicle takes either right or left turn. By regularly maintaining your wheel bearings, it will remain in working position for more than 100,000 miles.
In deferment of a car, wheel bearing is one of the important equipment. Wheel bearings are generally placed in hub of car (i.e. a part where wheels and brakes are attached), in brake drum or in rotor. The main function of wheel bearing is to make the wheel rotate freely while the car travels on the roads. In some cars there is wheel bearing in both internal and external portion of every wheel.
Component:-
Wheel Bearing is basically made up of two components. One is itself bearing and second is its race. The bearing comprises of metal housing, which is pushed above the line of ball bearings. The ball bearing is travel on a race that is smooth metallic surface. When the wheel rotates the ball bearings rotates on the opposite platform of the hub enabling the wheel to spin effortlessly.
Problems of Wheel Bearings:-
Wheel bearings problems depend in the way you care your device or how particular you are to operate the device. By applying oil seals, bearings get protection from dust and wreckage. If the seals are failed and the dust enters into bearings then damages can take place on both bearing and on race. Another reason may be enduring carrying off, leads to efficiency in functioning of bearings. If the bearings get separated completely, it will lead a car in a unmanageable and hazardous driving. The brakes will not work properly and the wheel will remove from its place. Hence, an uncontrolled vehicle is the result of damaged wheel bearing. If you are having a doubt that your wheel bearing is not proper than don’t take risk to drive the vehicle until it became proper and safe.
Symptoms:-
Noise comes as the car is driven and it gets louder with the increase in speed are the symptoms of bad bearing. Sounds like clicks, rumbles, groan etc with the speed of vehicle describes that wheel bearing is damaged and not able to lift the load. If the bearings are too old, the symptoms will be fuzzy routing, vibration and bad performance of suspension as the wheel runs randomly around the bearing.
Maintenance:-
Bearing damages can be verified by lifting up the car and pushing on the wheel. It may be bearing if the wheel moves excessively on the spindle. To repair or change the wheel bearings, the hubs, wheel and brakes need to be detached. When the bearing is seen, check bearing and races having any marks or scratches on it. Clean them thoroughly and refit them with bearing grease. This needs to be done after every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Hence wheel bearing is easy but lengthier process.
