Divorce can be a very difficult time. There is no way to sugarcoat the reality, divorce can be a very difficult time. During the early stages, the spouses and the children will wrestle with feelings of extreme uncertainty. Their heads will be filled with a lot of unanswered questions like, ‘where am I going to live?’, ‘how often am I going to get to see my children?’, and ‘how am I going to pay the bills?’
Because of the feelings of extreme uncertainty and additional negative feelings like ‘frustration’, ‘heartache’, and ‘anger’, the spouses are unable to think rationally. During the divorce process, especially during the early stages, the spouses will be so emotional that literally they are only able to think only with their emotions. That emotional thinking, ultimately causes the spouses the spiral down a slippery slope of poor decision making, which ultimately could cost them dearly in the courtroom, which will ultimately only cause the spouses to feel even more ‘frustration’, ‘heartache’, and ‘anger’.
We have compiled a list of three tips below that are designed to help spouses better cope with the stresses of divorce. Our advice is that you read these three tips, familiarize yourself with them, and then implement them into your own divorce scenario. The three tips are as follows:
Tip #1 – Do Not Go It Alone. Surprisingly enough, women are just as bad about ‘going it alone’ as men. Take our advice, when the divorce process is just getting underway, do not move forward with the divorce process using the ‘John Wayne’ approach. The ‘John Wayne’ approach, although it might be effective during the early stages of the divorce process, will ultimately leave you stranded and optionless. Instead, when the divorce process is just getting underway, call your mom, call your dad, your siblings, and your closest friends and communicate to them that the divorce is underway. Your close family members and friends, if they truly care about you, will be available to support you throughout.
Tip #2 – Only Receive Good Advice From People Who You Trust. There are a lot of spouses who will mess up their own divorce simply because they chose to act on bad advice. During the early stages of the divorce, the spouses are typically unable to think rationally and instead act out of emotion. When you take the high emotions and you add into the mix some bad advice from a friend, family member, or co-worker who is clueless, that mix is a recipe for disaster.
Take our advice, while you are heeding to tip #1, ask those people and those people alone for advice about how to proceed. Doing so will ensure that throughout the divorce process you only receive and act on advice from people who you know and trust.
Tip #3 – Take A Vacation. As odd as this might sound, you really should just ‘get away’ for a vacation so that you can step away from the whole divorce situation in order to do some soul searching. The vacation does not have to be elaborate, it can be as simple as a weekend fishing trip or shopping excursion, but whatever you choose to do, engage in it whole-heartedly. In other words, indulge your mind and your spirit in this ‘get away’. Doing so will allow you to return to the divorce situation refreshed, reinvigorated, and with a clear perspective on things.
