It turns out that you have landed a great summer internship, but it turns out to be in a city that you are not completely familiar with. You’re Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 schedule is pretty full with work that’s gaining you tons of real-world experience, but you’ve started to wonder how you’re going to fill your nights and weekends to make this summer one of the best in your life. After all, all work and no play makes a very boring summer. So what better time than the present to enjoy all the perks of an internship in a new city?
And if you’re in Dallas or Philadelphia this summer then you’re in luck. Here are some of the top places to hit this summer in these two cities:
Dallas:
Dallas Summer Musicals - Your summer internship in Dallas may end up being an experience that will allow you to feel the charm of the South while still getting all of the big city perks. Not to be outdone by cities such as New York and Chicago, Dallas also offers a bit of culture to its visitors and residents with its Broadway arts scene. The Dallas Summer Musical history began in 1941 with Opera Under the Stars at Fair Park with shows being held outside. Ten years later, the shows were moved to the music hall, which is still used today. In the recent years, the music hall has hosted mainstream musicals such as West side Story, Stomp, 9 to 5, and Guys and Dolls.
The music hall is conveniently located Southeast of downtown Dallas, and easily accessible by taking the railway system to the Fair Park station. There is a restaurant located in the facility that offers convenience for an entire night out on the town. Dining at the Music Hall opens two hours before show time with a large buffet that celebrates the heritage or locale of the musical being showed that evening.
The Galleria Dallas - They say everything is bigger in Texas, and when it comes to shopping malls there is no exception. The Galleria Dallas is an upscale shopping mall and mixed use development that will make your head spin. The mall is currently owned and managed by the same company that owns the Houston Galleria mall, and boasts some of the same features such as the ice skating rink and the Westin hotel.
With over 200 stores and such as Ann Taylor, Michael Kors, Tiffany, and Gucci and restaurants and food stores such as Godiva and the Westin’s The Oceanaire, your shopping experience will forever be changed. The ice skating rink centerpiece is considered the "best place to people watch in Dallas". The rink regularly welcomes elite skaters from around the globe. The mall also welcomes large groups and package deals with dinner and hotel arrangements.
Philadelphia:
Rittenhouse Square - Your summer internship in Philadelphia will be an inviting experience if you get out and enjoy what this city has to offer. Rittenhouse Square is one of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn. Today, the tree-filled park is surrounded by high-rise residences, luxury apartments, popular restaurants, a Barnes & Noble bookstore, a Barneys Co-Op, and two hotels, including a five-star. Its combination of green and glam take cues from New York’s Central Park, and provides a nice break from the hectic workday. Its green grasses and dozens of benches are popular lunch-time destinations for residents and workers in Philadelphia's Center City neighborhood, while its lion and goat statues are popular gathering spots for small children and their parents.
Independence Hall - Independence Hall is the centerpiece of Independence National Historic Park, and best known as the location where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both signed. It consists of a central building with belltower and steeple attached to two smaller wings. The belltower formerly housed the famous Liberty Bell. The buildings together sit on what is now known as Independence Square, a very popular Philadelphia tourist attraction. The famous building has been used as a stage for protests periodically because of the symbolism associated with its history. Also, as most would expect, it is the site for various events and celebrations such as Fourth of July gatherings.
The guided tour of Independence Hall is led by National Park Rangers, and begins in the courtroom where lawyers from opposing sides shared tables and law books. Lines can be very long, so to eliminate the excessive wait in line, free tickets can be picked up the morning of your visit for up to ten people. Visitors to Independence Hall can purchase tickets at the Independence Visitor Center at 6th and Market Streets.
