The concept of a fire hose is certainly not a new one. Since several decades now, the fire hose has replaced the old ways of fire fighting with buckets of sand or water. • Did you know that when it is fully extended, a fire hose is thirty six meters long with an outside diameter of nineteen millimeters?
• A fire hose is designed to give an output of 0.33 liters of water per second.
• Fire hoses are used to provide a controlled supply of water to a fire risk area in a reasonably easy way.
• There are two types of firemen: those who are paid with a salary, and those who do firefighting as voluntary work toward helping others.
• In theory, voluntary firefighters are unpaid, but this is not always the case.
• A firefighter must be on call twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. After all, fire doesn’t wait for the holidays to be over!
• The voluntary firefighters in Germany are called the Freiwillige Feuerwehr.
• Venezuela has three types of firefighters: salaried firefighters, voluntary firefighters
and university firefighters. They attend to fire emergencies on the university campus.
• Each seaport and airport has its own firefighting services.
• Singapore has conscripted firefighters in addition to their career firefighters and volunteer firefighters.
• In order of priority, the goals of firefighting are to taking care of their personal safety, protecting lives, protecting the property and to saving the environment.
• When fighting a fire, a firefighter must try to deprive it of fuel, oxygen, heat and chemical reactors that have the capability to inflame the fire further.
