Is this your first time building a woodworking shed? Before starting on this project, you must spend time doing research so you have a good grasp of building one. Sheds are not complex structures by any means, but that doesn't mean that the process of building them is a walk in the park.
The purpose of the shed plays a role in which size and design is best. For instance, if it's to store some miscellaneous items, such as a bicycle and some golf equipment, then you might only need a 4x6 shed. On the other hand, if the purpose is for storing lawn and garden equipment, such as a riding lawn mower, then a 10x12 or larger shed might be required. Be sure that the width of the doors are wide enough to accommodate your larger items.
Whatever you decide to use the shed for is up to you. The most important point is to plan everything ahead of time to avoid mistakes. Doing so also will allow you to be more confident as you start building, and completely the project in an efficient manner. Failing to plan means planning to fail.
Be sure to give much consideration to the shed location, particularly if you choose a concrete foundation. If you don't have a lot of space, then your choices will be limited. However, if you have a large backyard, then you will have a number of spots to put it. The more convenient the location, the better. Quick access comes in handy. The location should allow for sunlight to enter the shed.
Which roof style is preferred? Some of the more common ones include gable, gambrel, saltbox, flat, and pent roof. The easiest to build are pent and gable.
If you aren't quite sure about the specifics, go online and visit websites that offer shed plans for free to get ideas. Some websites will allow you to customize your own shed plans. Summerwood.com is one such example. You can get an idea of the options you have in order to optimize the shed as much as possible.
Once the shed has been built, there is no going back. You can't take enough time to plan for this project. Create a list of all items that you plan to store in the shed not only in the short term but long term as well.
