Once you become part of management in a company you have to change your behavior accordingly. Before you are a manager, success is about growing yourself but once you become a manager success means growing others in the company. Depending on the leader they will have different guide lines but there are certain ones that all should follow:
-
Leaders are continuously upgrading the team and sees every encounter as an opportunity to evaluate, coach, and build self confidence. As a leader, one must evaluate their team to make sure the right people are doing the right jobs while coaching them and building their self confidence with encouragement and recognition.
-
Leaders make sure all employees live and breathe the vision of the company. Leaders must talk about the vision all the time to their people so it becomes part of himself/herself and part of everyone. Everyone needs to focus on the vision because the vision defines the company and what it stands for.
-
Leaders must always show positive energy and optimism. The leader’s mood diffuses to all of the employees thus an upbeat positive mood leads to an organization with an upbeat positive mood, which is ideal for productivity. Plus it’s easier to get along with people in good moods; so it’s good for business.
-
Leaders must establish trust with candor, transparency, and credit. Leaders must be candid with their employees. It is imperative for leaders to be trustworthy. One can establish trust by giving credit where due. Leaders must also take responsibility for bad times and in good times generously commend his/her people. In addition do not let being a manager get to your head; stay humble. All of these ideals lead to a trustworthy leader.
-
Leaders must be able to make unpopular decisions and gut calls. As a leader you are going to have to make unfavorable decisions, it’s inevitable, so don't feel bad because it's just part of the job. Also you must be able to make gut calls. Your "gut" comes from your knowledge and experience, so when you have a gut feeling about something it’s probably a right feeling.
-
Leaders have to be able to ask all the questions. As a leader you are asking the questions for the employees to answer. Therefore you need to ask engaging questions that evoke debate and raise action. You need to make sure your questions and concerns are acted upon.
-
Leaders inspire risk taking and learning. Leaders need to show its okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. This shows it’s okay to take a risk without being punished for it. If a leader wants to embrace learning than they must create an atmosphere that is conducive for it.
-
Finally a leader must celebrate. Celebrating makes people feel like winners and they want to feel like that so they continue to work harder for the reward. As a leader you must take every opportunity you can to celebrate because work is too much a part of life not to acknowledge moments of achievement.
