My friend, Clara, makes a lot of money. Even as her money manager I often felt pangs of jealous of all the great clothes, handbags and cars she had. One day she came to my office for a meeting, we had planned to discuss her portfolio. She sat in my office looking blankly out the window until a touched her arm and said, "Clara, are you okay?" She looked at me and started crying. She began to tell me of all the hours she worked, over 100 a week, she had all this money and no time to spend it. Worst of all she was all alone, she could not remember the last time she even had a date. She rarely spent time in the home that she bought two years ago. She went on and on about all her stuff and how she was so lonely did not even matter. I realized that day, that I no longer was jealous of Clara's life. Even though I am not rich like Clara, I have many things she does not have, like love, time, freedom and hobbies. My conversation with her made me realize all of those things matter much more than money.
We feel this emotion when we are feeling insecure about our own situation. Jealousy often consists of a combination of presenting emotions such as anger, sadness, resentment and disgust. We see everyone else as having it easier and fail to see the work or sacrifice material items. Jealousy hinders you from just being you. It also hinders you from being happy with what you have in front you. Remember the greatest things in life are actually free: love, life, family, air, water and shade.
When you spend time thinking about what people around you have, you forget to look at all that you already have. Have you ever thought that maybe someone if jealous of you? It is amazing what people see from the outside, they might not see your life as you see it all. Also do you know what those people who you are jealous of had to do to get what you want? What if they had to work 80 hours a week for that nice car, would you be willing to do that? Also that car might look nice, but it is always in the shop. Would you really want that stress, probably not. I believe that putting yourself in their shoes and really looking at what their life is like can give you some insight that you may it better than you ever thought. Overcoming this emotion is essential because once you have freed yourself from feeling jealous, you are able to just be yourself. You are free to be you!
