European countries have plenty to offer culturally, historically, artistically and even gastronomically, which also means all kinds of short city breaks to choose from whether it is for a family getaway, a wild bachelor or hen do with your mates, or simply to seek a cultural experience not found back home.
Barcelona has plenty to offer with Gaudi and Dali, outstanding galleries, relics alongside avant garde architecture, stylish accommodation, outstanding bars and cuisine, all topped off by stunning Mediterranean shores.
The spell-blindingly delightful architecture designed by the Catalonian artist Antoni Gaudi is one of the main attractions. Many also flock to the low hill of Montjüic to take in the 360 degree views of the surrounding city which by itself is a treat. Take the Picasso walking tour and get acquainted with his favourite places when he lived here for a decade, a visit to the modernist Quatre Gats Cafe should be top of your list, and don't forget the Picasso Museum.
All over the city you will be awestruck at the art galleries and structures that signify Barcelona, but it is the Gaudi masterpieces that stand out. The Sagrada Familia celebrates the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus which is shown in the three main facades, while various Catholic expressions can be seen on its eighteen bell towers, and there are several striking stained glass windows you simply won't see in other cathedrals.
The Catalonian capital has an edgy appeal with a rich blend of everything you could want in a city including culture and glamour, but most of all it is influences found in the city architecture, be it contemporary or ancient ones, that are most impressive. Barcelona Cathedral, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, and the Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe are just a few of the spectacular architectural designs which will give your visual senses a feast. The striking Fish monument faces the ocean and is a breathtaking size measuring 35m by 54m. Made from stone, steel and glass, you cannot fail to spot it as its exterior is covered with shiny metal plates that change colours as the sun shines upon them.
There are also many more modern architectural gems in the district if you take a closer look, such as the relaxing and calming grounds of Can Framis Museum, the extremely energy efficient Marenostrum Tower, and not forgetting the iconic Agbar Tower looming at the entrance of the technological district.
Bars in Barcelona start to fill up from 2am onwards and there are plenty of after party bars that stay open just as late, or as early as 10am. These bars are not clubs but you can choose to chill or party some more depending on what you feel like at that time. There is a multitude of live music jam sessions, jazz, rock, and burlesque clubs to choose from especially in the Las Ramblas area but don't expect crowds until 2 or 3am. Barcelona also has an established Erasmus scene where you can make new friends quickly and party in designated venues. There is a predominantly distinct house scene, which is reflected by the number of clubs that keep that vibe alive the whole week. If you are weary of the Euro trash techno scene there is also rock, and Latin clubs with merengue is particularly popular.
You do not have to spend lots of money to visit other exotic places where there awaits exciting new culture, history, art, cuisine and shopping all in one place. Everyone needs a change of scenery from time to time and a few days away can give you time to see new things and work on that bond with friends and loved ones. Rental apartments in Barcelona come in all shapes and sizes; sometimes they can be an all-inclusive studio room, while some may come with fully equipped kitchens plus modern bathrooms. Most will also supply everything you have at home such as fresh bedsheets, refrigerator, oven, kettle, crockery, satellite television and WIFI internet access. The rental apartment market in Barcelona is very well established now so you should do some research and dig around to find out what is there.
