If you have ever, or are currently saying "I'm skinny but have belly fat!", then you are not alone. If you have a thin waist, but still your belly fat remains, take the time to read this article and you will discover the reason this happens and also what you can do to get rid of it. Learning how to get rid of it shall also enable you to prevent this disproportion from happening again in the future!
What Causes My Belly Fat to Remain?
The fat in your body is categorized in two different ways. Your subcutaneous fat is the fat that can be seen physically, and begins to be stored when there is an imbalance of usable energy in your body. In more common terms, if you consume a lot more carbs than you expel, then your body begins to overload and frantically search for places to store this excess energy in the form of fat. But often before you begin to see this subcutaneous fat, your body begins to store its first shipment as what is called visceral fat. Visceral fat is the fat that is stored inside your body around your organs, and cannot be seen from the outside. Visceral fat is obviously the more dangerous threat to your health, and is what eventually leads to things such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
If you are saying "I am skinny but have belly fat", then you most likely have eliminated most of your visceral fat but have somehow by-passed eliminating your subcutaneous fat. Your visceral fat is eliminated through healthier diet choices, and your subcutaneous fat is eliminated through 75% cardio exercises and 25% muscle training.
I'm Skinny But Have Belly Fat... What To Do About It:
It is likely that you have made better diet choices to remove the visceral fat from inside your body, allowing your remaining fat loss to be subtracted from your subcutaneous fat. But now you have to follow through with the 75-25 exercise approach to remove the rest of your 'outside' fat. It may seem like not such a big deal, but the main reason you may be skinny yet have not entirely removed the little bump of flab on your stomach could be because of just that... you have proportioned your workouts incorrectly. When you do cardio exercises, you are slowly burning off that subcutaneous fat (which is the main method of doing this), but it is still just as important to muscle train your abdominals at the same time to tone and 'direct' your stomach to where you want it to be. If you have been mainly focusing on doing sit ups and ab exercises, you will find that your belly flab will remain rather constant. Remember the 75% cardio and 25% muscle training ratio, and you will be well on your way to never again having to say "I'm skinny but have belly fat"!
