ECU refers to engine control unit. This is an electronic component in a car engine that usually controls the engine electronically to enhance engine performance to best levels. It is usually involved in combustion whereby air and fuel mix and is burnt to emit energy. ECU remapping refers to adjusting the electronic control unit of the engine of a car in order to improve its performance. For you to decide whether ECU remapping is necessary for your car or not, it is necessary to read through this article to know what this is all about.
When a car is manufactured, there are limits set in the ECU such that its performance is limited to the set limits. The limits are usually set under standards that may be set by law in some states. Limits of the settings may also be as a result of climatic conditions of a state among other reasons. This is in order for the car to withstand any conditions globally. ECU remapping involves adjusting these limits of ECU settings such that your car’s performance will improve where there are no regulations of the limits.
ECU remapping is most recommended where engine components have been altered by replacement with other components or else modification of existing engine components. For instance, a modified or replaced exhaust system means that combustion in the engine will be altered and settings of the ECU may not match with the modification. This leads to poor performance of the engine. It will be less powerful than it is supposed to be.
When such modifications are made to engine components, it will be of uttermost importance to have your car remapped. This will ensure that settings of the ECU will be adjusted to fit the new engine components. This means that your car engine’s performance will be boosted. This will not only improve the output power of the engine but will also ensure that the engine consumes fuel efficiently. The engine will also emit less petroleum gases. There is also an achievement with more stable control of the car’s electronic components.
ECU remapping usually involves flashing of the ECU computer program to give it new settings that come along with the flashing software. In other cases, ECU remapping can involve entire replacement of the existing ECU with a new ECU having advanced and better settings. However, ECU settings can be restored later on after remapping. This is capable whereby the initial ECU data is stored by the specialist remapping the ECU.
However, if the remapping is done and all limits exceeded, the fuel consumption by the car may increase. If the limits are remapped to lower the limits, then there would be less energy used by the engine in form of fuel. If the car is insured, it would be necessary to contact the insurer. This is to ensure that the insurer is aware of any modifications and whether such modifications will affect the insurance or raise costs of insurance. This depends with the insurer as different insurers have different terms and conditions.
