The Bernina Express is an express train that connects Switzerland with Italy, by crossing the Swiss Alps from north to south and a journey aboard the Bernina Express is considered as one of the greatest rail trips in the world. The Bernina Express travels on two lines, the Albula line and the Bernina line.
The Albula Line
The Albula line was constructed between 1898 and 1904 and has been operated by Rhaetian Railway since its creation. The Bernina Express leaves from the city of Chur and follows the Rhine to the town of Bonaduz. From there the Bernina Express continues towards Tiefencastel before crossing the Landwasser Viaduct and arriving at Filisur. The train then continues to Bergun, Bever and Samedan before reaching its final destination of St Moritz station.
The Bernina Line
The Bernina line was constructed between 1908 and 1910 by The Bernina Railway. In 1940 the Bernina line was taken over by The Rhaetian Railway. The Bernina Express leaves from St Moritz and heads towards Pontresina before ascending the valley to the Bernina Pass. The first station south of the Alps is Alp Grum. The Bernina Express then heads on to Cavaglia, Le Prese, Miralago and Brusio before crossing the Italian border at Campocologno and ending its hourney at Tirano.
World Heritage Site
On July 7, 2008 both the Albula line and Bernina line were added to the Unesco World Heritage List due to their remarkable scenery and ingenious engineering. There are only three other railways in the world to be considered universally outstanding by UNESCO, all of which are located in India.
Accommodation
The Bernina Express comprises of large first and second class panoramic cars with windows that extend to the top of the train, offering spectacular views throughout the journey. In addition, a multi lingual commentary is available for passengers. The Bernina Express also includes a railbar that serves drinks and snacks. The railbar is available on the following routes, Chur to Tirano, Bergun to Tirano and St Moritz to Tirano.
Extras
If you are looking for a little bit more excitement on your journey you can pay extra to sit with the driver as you cross the highest crossing of the Alps. The ticket costs roughly $750 per person and includes a first class return ticket, a personal photograph and a detailed printed plan of the trip. Unfortunately, you don’t get to drive the train.
