Sedation dentistry has really made the trip to the dentist become more bearable for most people. But this does not mean that you can avail this anytime you please. You would have to be examined thoroughly before your dentist would agree to subject you to this kind of treatment. After all, this procedure would involve the use of medication.
Among the most common used is known as Anxiolysis. In here, there is only some mild form of sedative being used and it is popularly known as the "laughing gas." The thing about this sedative is that it makes use of nitrous oxide which is being administered right into the nose of the patient.
What happens is that a nose-hood will be placed on top of the nose and this is where the nitrous oxide would come from. This would automatically allow the patient to inhale the formulation, thereby causing some positive feelings of well-being. It also causes some numbness for the patient.
Another technique used in sedation dentistry is known as Moderate Sedation. Through this, you would be able to have your consciousness under a depressed state. However, you would retain your ability to breathe and act on reflexively without any help.
Intravenous sedation is a moderate sedation that happens by injecting the medicine right into your veins. The other type is known to be intramuscular sedation but this is done by injecting the medicine right into the muscles of the patient. But the latter is less likely to be used and may only be prescribed for some cases.
In contrast with moderate sedation, deep sedation involves losing control over your own breathing and reflex functions. What happens here is that the patient slips into a state of total unconsciousness wherein a respirator and some other necessary vital signs monitor are also being used to make sure that the patient is okay throughout the whole procedure.
Even in sedation dentistry, general anesthesia is also being used as a technique. This is used on surgical cases, wherein the patient has to undergo a major treatment. Because of the many implications it could case, general anesthesia would only be given after the patient has been fully monitored and assessed by an anesthesiologist and an internist for clearance purposes.
When opting for sedation dentistry, make sure you can find someone who can bring you to and from the hospital or clinic. This way you can have someone to assist you after the entire dental procedure is done because the medicines used for sedation dentistry often take some time to completely wear off.
