How to find the perfect jewellery for you

Finding the perfect jewellery can be difficult when there’s such a wide selection to choose from. Whether you’re on the High Street or shopping online, the sheer number of retailers available means you’re rather spoilt for choice. Whether it’s something traditional or a more contemporary piece, there is, quite literally, something for every taste. But when it comes to choosing something for a more special occasion – such as a wedding – you want to be sure that you get something that’s just right.
Many jewellers will be happy to help, but there’s a vast difference between wearing something in a shop for a few minutes and owning an item indefinitely. Indeed, even the light in the showroom can affect the inherent lustre and qualities of the piece, meaning that it can look a lot different when seen under the unforgiving glare of daylight. This is particularly the case with gemstones, as these will often have a varying luminescence depending on the type and quality of light that refracted off of them. Though it might be difficult persuading the jeweller to let you venture into the street for a better look at an expensive ring, he might well accompany you to the window, so you can admire the various tones from the safety of the shop.
You also need to think about the material of your jewellery item. If you want to wear it with other pieces in your collection, then you either need to find something that perfectly complements or contrasts with them. Different shades of gold are notoriously tricky to match and failing to do so could have you end up looking like a less stocky version of Mr. T. This is certainly the case with yellow or rose gold, as they are often subject to a lot of variation depending on the purity of the mix. White gold and platinum are easier to match up, but even here, there is a notable difference between the two materials and pairing them in close juxtaposition will only end up looking gaudy.
Matching different styles can also be difficult and this is sadly one of the reasons why so much jewellery is sold for scrap. Contemporary designs from a little as the early nineties are very much out of fashion and the erstwhile trend for looped earrings and chunky bangles goes some way to show that it’s not always the best idea to buy purely according to fashion. Unless you like the inherent qualities of a piece of jewellery, then you’re better off saving your money for another time.
