What is a hollow drill and what is it used for?
A hollow drill is a mechanical device, which is used to punch out a piece from a material and drilling holes trough several objects and surfaces. Hollow drills can be made of different sorts of metal like steel and it is available in many different types, shapes and sizes. They are used for a wide range of tasks in many industries. The most common hollow dill is used to dill holes in stacks of papers, respectively punch the holes through it. Normal drills can't do this kind of job, because paper is a very soft and flexible material and the drill would tear the paper instead of drill clean hole into it. The hollow drill is cylindrical and hollowed out, so the razor-sharp edge is outside.
That means that the punched out paper goes trough the hole instead of creating a lot of paper filings.
The hollow drill can be enhanced by coating the edge with diamonds. That increase the power of the drill immensely. These diamond hollow drills are use in the building industry for instance to drill through concrete. A normal hollow drill would wear too fast compared to a diamond hollow drill. The method of a diamond coating is used for many different tools like the milling machine.
The milling machine is a tool that, as the name implies, mills trough many materials. It is almost always used with a Computer System named CNC. It is a very useful tool and with the diamond coating, the lifetime of this tool will be increased enormous. But why is this diamond coating this strong? That's very simple, because diamond is a very hard material, the hardest material known on earth. The coating of the diamond tools are synthetic but it is as strong as the original diamond.
To cut materials, they invented machines like the laser beam cutting technology, but for other task, the diamond tools are still very useful. The competitor of the laser beam is the water jet cutting technology by the way. This technique uses water, which is under a high pressure, to cut through hard materials like metal. The water jet cutting technology is not as old as the laser beam technology, but it has a high potential, because it works with water and that means there will be no high temperature that would deform the material. That is a great advantage for this method.
