There are more benefits to having straight teeth than a beautiful smile. When teeth are properly aligned, they’re easier to clean and lead to fewer gum problems. Crooked teeth affect speech and cause pressure on the jaw that leads to headaches. Misaligned teeth also negatively impact one’s ability to eat. Aligning teeth leads to improved health, a better smile and confidence. However, no one want’s to wear braces for a year and a half let alone three years. Thankfully, today’s orthodontic technology offers a variety of teeth straitening options.
Perhaps the most unappealing aspect of braces for, at least for teenagers, is how visibly unattractive they are. Ceramic braces are an alternative to conventional braces. They align teeth the same way as traditional braces however ceramic braces match the color of teeth making them far less noticeable. If not properly cared for, ceramic braces can discolor; following an orthodontist's instructions will prevent staining.
Pain and discomfort are other downsides to wearing traditional braces. Tightening braces puts large amounts of pressure on teeth that is typically uncomfortable. The Damon brace system is one that works without the use of ties. With Damon braces, routine tightening isn’t necessary which means teeth are gently aligned. Damon braces are equally effective as traditional braces but with significantly less discomfort.
Invisalign is an alternative to conventional braces that is both visually appealing and comfortable. Using a series of nearly invisible aligners, Invisalign straightens teeth in as little as nine months. Each set of aligners is worn for an average of two weeks before being replaced by the next set. With each new set of aligners, teeth are gradually moved into a straight position.
Less visible than ceramic braces and more comfortable than Damon braces, Invisalign offers the best of both worlds. During treatment, visits to the orthodontist are few and far between and are only to ensure that the treatment is working. The removability of Invisalign is another clear advantage over other straitening methods. Unlike other treatment options, Invisalign aligners can and should be removed when eating or brushing teeth, meaning there’s no hassle for these daily tasks.
Orthodontics has come a long way from headgear and conventional braces. Each alignment method has definite pros and cons that accompany treatment. Consulting with an orthodontist will ensure that you choose the option that’s right for you. Whatever treatment option you choose, the end results are straight teeth, a healthier mouth, and a brighter smile.
