Curtains and blinds are two of the popular choices to dress a window. While each of them looks differently, both of them serve their purposes impeccably.
These window treatments can make any part of a home—be it a living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, etc.—come to life. They can also make space feel larger and create a more inviting feeling.
But when asked how to choose the right window covering, the rule one size fits all doesn’t apply here. It depends on who owns the home and where to place it.
However, selecting the perfect fitting window shades for certain spaces doesn’t come easy. There are important considerations to follow so that a curtain or blind matches the spaces around the house.
3 Important Considerations
Personal Preference
Blinds and curtains are often an overlooked home décor aspect. They’re placed as a low priority because homeowners tend to focus more on furniture, appliances, and more.
The thing is, window furnishings share equal importance to home interior and equipment. Without the right curtain or blind, a house will look dull and gloomy, not to mention that the family’s privacy and comfort are put at stake.
That’s why when buying curtains, owners of the house must check if their personal preferences jive with the room’s light and privacy requirement; coordinate with the wall colour and matches the accent pieces in the room.
If they’re content with the overall look of their room spaces, then nothing could ever wrong. After all, they’re the ones who will be going to look at them every day.
Privacy or Light
While picking the right curtains and blinds depends on every house dweller, it’s important that privacy and light aren’t disregarded.
Window treatments increase the privacy of a room and filter out bright light. So, it makes great sense to select ones that will keep rooms private while at the same time controlling the light that comes in.
This is where the right fabric comes in handy. Lighter fabrics are ideal if aiming to make rooms look larger and vivid, while heavy fabrics are the perfect choice for rooms that require greater privacy and warmth.
Also, it’s crucial to pick the right colour. First, decide whether the window furnishing will pop or blend into the background. Then, look at the existing colour palette and choose the dominant colour.
Practicality
While picking the right curtains and blinds depends on every house dweller, privacy and light shouldn’t be disregarded.
But there’s another aspect that shouldn’t be left behind—practicality. Imagine buying an expensive pair of shoes, they look great but can hurt the feet and pockets. The same thing applies when buying curtains and blinds.
Curtains might be a great home interior, but they’re costly, high maintenance and must be changed time and again. That’s why blinds are more practical than curtains. The former is only bought once and can last for decades, depending on how it’s managed and maintained.
Like curtains, window blinds are also offered in various materials, tones and styles. Among the common types are PVC Venetian blinds, vertical blinds, Roman blinds, pleated blinds, and so on.
Which is Better Blinds or Curtains?
Both blinds and curtains can cover up windows aesthetically. But, each window treatment has its strengths over the other.
Curtains are generally considered a casual window covering. They’re great at keeping light at bay but bad at controlling the amount of light filtering through. Blinds, on the hand, look more formal and offer better light control.
Choose Wisely!
Windows are the eyes to the house. If not dressed well, they can negatively impact the overall appearance of the house.
This is why homeowners should invest in a high-quality window shade—be it a curtain or a blind. Window furnishings must be chosen accordingly to serve their purpose better and to make rooms grander, cosy and inviting.
