Getting the home of your dreams is a liberating feeling, but moving to a new place, uprooting your old connections, and relocating with all your belongings is a challenging task. There are so many boxes to unpack and so many things to take care of that it can easily overwhelm you.
But, it need not. This post will quickly take you through ten simple tips, which you can easily follow to make the whole unpacking process burden-free. Hang tight and read on.
- Don’t Panic
First thing’s first. Calm down. Take a deep breath. Don’t let cardboard boxes of different shapes and sizes, covering every inch of the room and cluttered about carelessly, push you into a hyper-manic state. You’d be tempted to start unpacking in a frenzy. Don’t do that. It will only lead to a further mess.
- Pump Yourself
On the opposite side of the coin, seeing disordered things strewn about, and the fact that YOU have to set them right might put you off. It might force you to take shelter under procrastination’s wing. But remember, delay begets delay. It’s a never-ending night. Brush it off and bring back that enthusiasm. You can definitely do this!
- Make a List
There are a thousand things to do when it comes to unpacking. But they can’t all be done at once. Multitasking might sound glorious, but it’s really not. Tackling ten things at a time is distracting to the last degree. You’re not even able to do a single thing right. So, prioritize. Outline all the tasks you’re to do and follow the list rigorously. One thing at a time.
- Team Up!
Resetting an entire house on your own is a herculean feat. It is not recommended, as it may lead to a breakdown, mental or physical. Instead, why don’t you boost the fun factor and include your whole family in the unpacking process? Team up and set about the rooms together. Less load and more bonding.
- Allocate Boxes
It’s a basic human instinct to bring order into chaos. Thus, start with decentralizing the load, distributing and allocating boxes to their respective rooms, so that they’re not all accumulated in one place, heating things up for you.
- Set the Core Rooms First
Wouldn’t it be slightly hilarious if you started unpacking your delicate china first before anything else? I’m sure it would. So, begin with the most important rooms in the house, like the kitchen and bathrooms. That’s a survival strategy. I’m not kidding.
- Sort out the Inessential
Unpacking comes with a lot of screening. While going through the boxes one by one, you come across the stuff that you wonder why you even packed in the first place. You don’t really need it. So, it’s better to give it away. Set up a yard sale or donate. Keep your home interior minimalistic.
- Chuck Away for Later
It’s impossible to cover each and every area of the house in a single day. Unpacking takes a lot of time. It’s a fact. So, be patient and keep some boxes for later. Stash them away in a closet for now. They can be dealt with the next day.
- Take a Breather
Don’t stay cooped up in the empty house for too long, overcome with tension, and a whole lot of frustration. You’ll lose your mind. Instead, go out and have a calming walk. Give yourself the space to relax, talk to a friend on the phone, or order pizza for dinner, etc. It’s up to you. You’re not a machine, after all.
- Get Connected
Once you’re done setting the basic stuff, it’s time to re-establish your link with the world. You’ve been off-the-grid for too long now. Get the best home phone, internet, and TV connections at incredibly affordable prices in your new area, and socialize again.
See? I told you. Unpacking’s a piece of cake with these hacks.
